I am a really big fan of the MetroUI that we first saw with the ZuneHD, the Zune for the Desktop media player and now with Windows Phone 7. One of the things that I have mentioned a few times on various podcasts with Paul is how much I would love to see the same design brought to the Windows desktop.
I have even gone as far a suggesting that a MetroUI desktop could be a good way to reboot the whole Windows desktop user interface and that possibly we could see the beginning of that in the future Windows 8 – if it proves to be popular with Windows Phone 7.
Well it appears that at least one listener or reader has heard my viewpoint on this and how much I would love to have a MetroUI and pointed me to Omnimo 2 at DeviantART (thanks @jdawgc). I finally got around to installing all the bits needed for this specialized Windows theme today and get it running.
To be clear this isn’t a Windows theme but rather a theme package for a Windows desktop utility program called Rainmaker and you will need the newest version of it installed in order to be able to use this theme. Once you get it installed and the Omnimo 2 theme files put in place your desktop will now be sporting a very Windows Phone 7 style desktop.
This is what mine currently looks like
I gotta admit that even if this isn’t a native Windows UI option this is as about as close as one can get right now and I am loving it.
The tiles that are visible in the screen shot are only a portion of the available tiles that you can select from. They are all movable so you can put them where ever you want on your desktop. There is also a number of different skins and backgrounds available which you can see in the Gallery dialog that is accessible by clicking on the ‘+’ icon by the date.
Omnimo 2 Gallery
Like I said I am loving this as for some reason Omnimo 2 makes my desktop seem to be more functional. Yes I realize that there are a lot of desktop widgets that will accomplish much of what you get with Omnimo but this seems to be a lot cleaner and functional desktop.
What’s your thoughts on the re-imaging of the desktop using Omnimo 2 – would it work for you?

Looks nice, but something isn't clear: does Rainmeter have to be installed beforehand, or does the Omnimo package come with it?

Likesorry about that. Rainmeter needs to be installed first and run once before putting the Omnimo files in place. I installed Rainmeter ran it and then shut it down right away. Then I moved the files into place
