Just incase you aren’t familiar with this excellent free graphics program for Windows I suggest you get your but over to the Paint.Net site and grab yourself a copy. I have been using this as my main graphics program since it was first announced as a beta only release many years ago and haven’t regretted it one.
Now tday I find out via Brandon LeBlanc at The Windows Blog that the Paint.Net team have just released a new version – v3.5 – that includes support for DirectWrite on Windows 7 machines.
DirectWrite is one of the new additions to the DirectX family of APIs in Windows 7. DirectWrite enables better readability, adds support for a large variety of languages and scripts, and in conjunction with Direct2D provides superior rendering performance for Windows applications. Applications can also use DirectWrite with GDI and carry forward existing investments in the Win32 code base. You can read more about DirectWrite here.

The big caveat of course is that this release is still classified as an Alpha release so if you aren’t comfortable running bleeding edge software you might what to hold off a bit. If you do decide to give it a try or even just use the current stable release don’t forget to drop by the Plugin forum page for some really great effects plugins for the program.
