Office 2010 tips screensaver

Those old enough to remember will recall a time when screensavers actually had a reason for being; to stop screen burn in, but those days are pretty well long gone and flying toasters now longer fly across out monitor screens; except for Microsoft.

It seems that someone came up with a clever idea to put together a whole bunch of tips for the new Office 2010 and put them together as a screensaver.

However the thing that attracted my attention was the Metro UI influence in how the tips are displayed. Don’t take my word for it – check it out for yourself and just in case you want to actually use this screen you can check it out on the Office blog or just go for the gusto and download it.

More end of life news from Microsoft – this time it’s Office XP

Gee today seems to have more than its fair share of end of support news doesn’t it. This time the news is coming via the Microsoft Office Updates blog (yes it actually exists) where they announce that as of July 12, 2011, that Office XP will be no longer receiving any kind of support from Microsoft.

Per our earlier post, this is a reminder that on July 12, Office XP will exit the Extended Support phaseof its lifecycle, per the Support Policy of Microsoft.
After the end of support, Microsoft will no longer provide public fixes for the Office XP release. Automatic Updates that ship on “Patch Tuesday” will be discontinued for Office XP. There will be no effect on installed software; products will still continue to function., activation will continue to work as expected.

If you are using Office XP and are wondering what your options are it’s pretty simple as far as Microsoft is concerned – upgrade

Microsoft recommends that customers keep their systems secure by upgrading to the latest, supported product and/or service pack, such as Microsoft Office 2010. Office 2007 Service Pack 2 and Office 2003 Service Pack 3 are also supported for the duration outlined in the Support Lifecycle Product Database.

Get ready – Office 2010 SP1 coming your way

We all know that Microsoft is going to announcing the general availability of Office 365 but word is that at the same time they will be making Service Pack 1 for Office 2010 available the same day.

According to Tom Warren at WinRumors the service pack will be available for download at 9AM PST and all language versions of the package will be available at the same time.

The following goodies are suppose to included in SP1,

Outlook fixes an issue where “Snooze Time” would not reset between appointments.
Integrated community content in the Access Application Part Gallery.
Better alignment between Project Server and SharePoint Server browser support.
Improved backup / restore functionality for SharePoint Server
Project Professional now synchronizes scheduled tasks with SharePoint task lists.
Internet Explorer 9 “Native” support for Office Web Applications and SharePoint
Office Web Applications Support for Chrome
Inserting Charts into Excel Workbooks using Excel Web Application
Visio Fixes scaling issues and arrowhead rendering errors with SVG export
Proofing Tools improve spelling suggestions in Canadian English, French, Swedish and European Portuguese.

Microsoft offering up $50,000 for your Office 365 story

I just had this land in my inbox but it seems that Microsoft has a new contest happening that could win you $50,000.

Called the “Microsoft Office 365 We’re Ready For Work, Wherever You Are Contest” the idea is for you to share your story about how Office 365 can, or has helped you achieve your “vision”. Interestingly enough they are using a Facebook page as the starting point for the contest.

Has Office Web Apps flown past Google Docs?

Microsoft might be a little shy about providing numbers when it comes to Windows Phone but they definitely don’t mind when it comes to products that are beating their competition.

Such is the case with the web version of Office as Microsoft let us know today that nearly 50 million people are using Office Web Apps on a monthly basis. This is contrast to the last publicly stated numbers from Google that pinned Doc user numbers at 25 million active users.

Microsoft started making the free Web versions of Office available last year.

Microsoft’s Outlook Hotmail Connector gets an update

For those of you using Outlook and the handy Outlook Hotmail Connector you might want to head to the Microsoft Download Center and grab yourself a nice fresh copy of the update package for it.

For those of you not familiar with the Outlook Hotmail Connector it is a handy plugin for Microsoft’s Outlook that allows you to connect to your Windows Live Hotmail email account so you can handle everything from in Outlook.

The version number for the updated Hotmail Connector is 14.0.5139.5001.

Here is what has been updated from the Outlook Hotmail Connector page:

Several send/receive issues are fixed.
The Outlook junk email filter within Outlook is turned off for Hotmail accounts (this was erroneously flagging good mail as junk). Junk messages are now detected at the Hotmail mail server. Any entries you made in Outlook for the junk email filters (Safe Senders, Blocked Senders, and Safe Recipients) continue to work correctly and synchronize between Outlook and the Hotmail mail server.
Fixes for hangs and crashes experienced when sending meetings using the Hotmail Connector and when adding a new Hotmail account to an existing profile.
Fix for an issue where Windows Live contacts’ birthdays and anniversaries shifted by one day when synchronized with Outlook.
Fix for an issue that blocked synchronization of the Category property in an Outlook contact with Windows Live.
