An AT&T world created by using amazing body painted hands – wow!

I absolutely love the art form of body painting and have even posted some of my favorites over on my Braincell Soup blog and normally these great images would have been posted there except for the subject matter making it more tech oriented, or at least enough to post here.

It seems that body painting artist extraordinaire Guido Daniele did up a whole series of body painting pieces for AT&T featuring world landmarks but using hands painted to resemble the landmarks. As Anita Hovey over at Bit Rebels noted it is really hard to pick just a couple of the excellent pieces to highlight here so make sure to hit the links and see all of Guido’s awesome work.

In the meantime here’s some of the ones that I really liked.

All Eyes On You by Britzpetermanns

This is an interesting project from the creative studio Britzpetermanns that utilizes the popular open source Arduino prototyping platform to help create a bunch of eyeballs that follow you as you pass by the window.

From the page on the Creative Applications site, since they can explain it much better than I can:

“All Eyes On You” by Britzpetermann are bunch of varied sized eyes that follow the passers-by. The team used a high quality projector and semi-matt foil to project the eyes on the window. They are rendered by a WebGL frontend using a shader sphere effect. The detection is performed by OpenFrameworks and the Kinect.
An Arduino controlled servo motor, pushing a button on the projector remote, is turning the installation on at 4pm and off at 11pm.

It’s fun watching people’s reactions to the installation even though the idea of a bunch of floating eyeballs watching you might be a little unsettling.

Spread Your Wings by Kiseon Han

Okay I realize that this subject matter may not exactly be in the purview of this blog since Jeeps really don’t have much to do with geekdom or technology, however I do have an excuse.

Some seriously awesome animation by artist Kiseon Han and a not bad soundtrack to go with it. I’m not sure if this is something that we’ll see on television advertising the reasons to go out an buy a Jeep but it should go far in getting Han some more work.

iPhone Siri ad versus Microsoft’s Techno Dad .. really Microsoft this is the best you can do?

Over the years there has been a fairly serious, although sometime tongue in cheek attitude, competition when it comes to the advertising from Apple and the attempts from Microsoft.

For the most part the tries from Microsoft have either bordered on dorky to corporate blandness, whereas Apple’s ads have always been … well .. Apple.

Even now with each companies out there trying to promote new products Apple still has a better grip in my opinion on what makes effective ads that appeal to people. Whereas Microsoft is still coming off looking like it is trying to be cool but an’t seem to get it, so instead we get some 50-year-old in a shirt and tie trying to do a dubstep, or something, and looking like an idiot in the processes.

But you judge for yourself and tell me is I’m wrong.

Now here’s some old dude doing a dubstep, or something.

I don’t proclaim to know what the solution is for Microsoft and its inane attempts at consumer advertising but I don’t think this is it.

Microsoft to open war-chest to help Nokia and Samsung with ad bucks

Now that Mango has shipped and new Windows Phones are going to start hitting the market the time for some serious advertising is here; which means that there is going to be a lot of money flowing to bring the Windows Phone, and the spiffy new handsets, to the general public.

This is an expensive proposition at the best of times but for Microsoft and Windows Phone it is also a crucial time; and so Microsoft has decided to start helping companies like Nokia and Samsung when it comes to paying for all those ads.

In England alone Microsoft is rumored to be sending Nokia close to £20m as part of their wider strategic agreement for the two companies to work together on marketing. Samsung apparently has gotten a similar deal but not quite a much money with a reported £8bn only going to the company.

A source to Mobile Today said

‘Microsoft is funding a massive campaign with Nokia across every single media you can imagine. It’s the last roll of the dice for them. They must go big, bad and boldly. Microsoft is desperate to kick the hell out of Android. If they can get across how amazing Mango is they could really crack it this time.’

The fact is that Microsoft will have to spend a small fortune as we head into the holiday season, which is a prime mobile device selling period. Between the overwhelming popularity of the iPhone and carrier apathy Microsoft has a tough road ahead so if spending a few million here and there to help spread the word it can only be good money spent in the long run.

AOL and Yahoo to use Microsoft’s ad platform in new deal

Yahoo and AOL are losing to Facebook and Google in online advertising, and it is projected that by the end of this year, online advertising on Yahoo’s network will drop 11% from 16.1% in 2009, and AOL 2.7% from 4.4% in 2009. Microsoft, on the other hand, isn’t doing too shabby in online advertising, as a matter of fact, they are updating their Atlas offering as part of the $6 billion AQuantive deal but this didn’t stop them from teaming up with Yahoo! and AOL for a new ad strategy.

As reported on AllThingsD, the trio entered an advertising deal that sums up to the selling each other’s “Class 2 display” inventory or graphic ads the companies can’t sell on their own, and would normally hand over to ad networks. The deal was made to gain back revenue lost from ad networks and other ad platforms like Facebook and Google. But this doesn’t mean that they are exclusively tied to each other. They can still utilize ad networks or other ad platforms.

According to Peter Kafka, “The theory is that if, say, AOL has a big order for a certain kind of ad impressions, it will fill it with its own inventory as well as what’s available from Microsoft and Yahoo.”

The deal was announced at last night’s dinner meeting at Manhattan attended by representatives from the three companies as well as a group of top Web publishers and ad buyers who they pitched their plan to.

The idea for the team p came from the startup 5to1, which Yahoo purchased, that wanted to build “an online advertising alliance consisting exclusively of major media publishers.”

Yahoo and Ganett Co. are also expanding their local advertising alliance to cover all of Ganett’s 19 broadcast markets nationwide. Ganett’s TV stations and newspaper sites package Yahoo ad space with their own online inventory using Yahoo’s APT platform to deliver targeted display advertising. At the same time, Gannett provides editorial content across Yahoo properties, including the home page.

AOL’s Project Devil is a new ad that will be four times bigger than their current inventory and will feature space for a photo gallery, a video, coupons, Facebook or Twitter updates or maps, and some ads will also be enabled with a 3D product viewing option, with click-to-buy functionality. But the new ad format already hit a bump, as advertisers love Project Devil but are hesitant to invest in something that can only be used in AOL.

“…advertisers…are reluctant to spend money building out a custom ad that only runs on AOL,” said David Cohen, global digital officer at the ad agency UM. He added that he is a big advocate and partner of AOL and its efforts.

Microsoft’s remained an attractive partner as it gains in search and advertising, and Yahoo’s keeping its ties strong, even after turning down Microsoft’s $45 billion offering back in 2008. The two have teamed up on search as well, a deal that was solidified early last year. For the flailing Yahoo and AOL, there are more important things to focus on, like toppling Google and Facebook in the ad field.
