As cool as astronomers might be they can be pretty boring and staid when it comes to naming new stuff that they find out there in the universe. Sorta like naming the two new moons circling Pluto with boring P4 and P5.

Thankfully the SETI Institute and Dr. Mark Showalter, on behalf of the P4/P5 discovery team, decided to throw open a poll that would allow folks to vote on some more realistic names. Now, after weeks of online voting we have some clear winners: Vulcan and Cerberus.

It should be no surprise that the name Vulcan got the majority of the votes, after all space is a pretty geeky thing, but it also didn’t hurt that William Shatner, aka Captain Kirk, caught wind of the poll and let all his TWitter followers know about it.

The actual votes for the two broke down like this:

  • Vulcan – 174,000 out of 450,324 votes
  • Cerberus – 100,000

The two planets were discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope and are roughly 15 – 20 miles in diameter which makes them pretty damn small moon wise.
