DARPA’s Wound Stasis Program AKA Spray Foam For Your Body [Video]
When one thinks of DARPA, the military’s department of far-out and cool toys, one typically thinks of things like robots or fancy defense systems, however that isn’t all that they do it would seem.
One of the newer technologies that they are developing in conjunction with Arsenal Medical is called Wound Stasis and for a lack of a better explanation it is very similar to having expanding spray foam injected into your abdominal cavity; which will create pressure in the voids found there, and reducing blood loss from internal bleeding.
Early testing of the system has shown a six-fold reduction of blood loss which in turn sees a dramatic increase in the 3-hour survival rate of 72 percent, up from the current 8 percent.
The foam is injected into your body using a two-part compound that then expands to conform to the inside of your body cavity. Then when you are stabilized at the hospital the foam can be removed by the surgeon working on you.
Talk about thinking out of the box, or would that be out of the abdomen?
