Actually it is more about the very idea of there being anything like a cloud operating system in the first place. I realize that the idea of a cloud OS is probably the ultimate geek’s dream but as I was working on another post for later I got to thinking about this and really folks if you think that we are going to have anything close to a real cloud operating system anytime soon .. well I want the drugs you’re taking.

Think about it for a moment. Really think about it. What is the most important key ingredient that is needed for any kind of cloud OS to work?

Right – connectivity to the Internet.

Not just any old connectivity mind you; but rather a totally ubiquitous and dumb pipe access at a price that even the poorest person can afford. We are nowhere near having anything like that and given the broadband providers penchant for screwing the consumer we aren’t likely to see it anytime soon.

So the idea of a cloudOS, where you just turn on your machine and are running everything via some OS software hidden away in a data center somewhere is wishful thinking. It might be a nice dream and one that companies like Google, Apple and Microsoft would love to see happen but at this point in time and for some time to come that is all it is.

A dream.
