Let’s get something straight right from the beginning.

Apple’s Mac vs. PC ads are classics and carried out with the same artsy perfection that their computers are.

Microsoft’s PC vs. Mac come off as a whiny self-indulgent better than thou’ only because there are more PCs than Macs attitude.

Like, seriously, look at the woman in that header image that can be found on the new Microsoft PC vs Mac comparison page. Have you seen anything more generic or looking like a refugee from a stock photo site?

C’mon Microsoft. Do we look like idiots out here? Even in your page design you are so Microsoft right down to the now standard Window Live Wave 4 swirly header. I’m not suggesting that someone, somewhere in that great monolith isn’t capable of great design. After all this is the same generic company that has given us probably the greatest user interface refresh with MetroUI, the problem is you only seem to let them out on rare occasions.

But this constant need to compare yourself to a totally different company with a totally different design ethic is getting to be really embarrassing. Face it. You are not Apple. You will never be Apple and for the most part there is nothing wrong with that and I for one am glad, for the most part, that you aren’t (I’ll be even happier when Ballmer is gone though).

What is really stupid is that you think that comparing Microsoft to Apple is going to bring you any converts. Please. Give your head a shake. The chances of any Mac user suddenly waking up one day and going “Gee I think I’ll give up this beautiful artsy piece of computing joy that gets me all kinds of social brownie points and buy myself a Windows machine” is as likely to happen as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates having a love child.

Unlike Alex Wilhelm at The Next Web I don’t consider this a shining example of Microsoft getting a backbone and giving Apple the middle finger. As he points out in his breakdown of the so-called selling points on the stupid ass comparison page there is more ties between the two products than there are any real Microsoft is better points.

I do think though that this is just another stupid marketing idea looking for a justification for a budget increase for a marketing department that can’t seem to come up with anything truly unique and innovative.

I tell you what. Why don’t you give your team behind MetroUI that advertising budget and see what they can come up with. At least when they do some cool and innovative they actually succeed.
