PJ’s Forum Round-up 7.10.08

9

I received a PM today which reminded me that I have been remiss in my duties….  Real life stepped in over the weekend (as well as my zealous participation in the forums) and I lost track of time.

So, without further ado, let us recap last weeks doings.

Dancer’s became a grandmother.  Again.  She did this just a few years ago.  We’re wondering if she’s learned anything about abstinence by now.  Many congrats Dancer.  Don’t know how you keep pumping them out but if they’re like you, this world is a better place for it.

ChadMan’s been lighting up a firestorm about politics in The Cage.  I’m beginning to wonder if he’s a pyromaniac in disguise….  Check out The Cage for the last five topics and you’ll get a taste for the evilness he’s brewing up.  His comments have been like Molotov cocktails on the smoldering embers of election politics.  (Note, you can’t get there if you haven’t registered and asked for access.  So, sign up, put your flame suit on and jump in!)

There’s been a few things happening down over the Software News & Information way.  ~David~ brought up a post on the ReactOS. couple of folks chimed in and what do you know, ~David~ got it to work in a virtual machine.  Even Pierre couldn’t pull that one off.  Go David!  On the other hand (*cringe*  bad choice of words there….), our Resident Gimpette HelloKit is out to save the world money!  She tossed us a link to a freeware data recovery for flash memory.  She’s my new heroine.

Down south in the Hardware Help area we find Dontor talking about a Wireless range extender.  While I’m pretty sure he’s referring to one of those spam e-mails that he loves reading, he’s actually gotten quite a few responses from folks that have real-world experience in this arena.

For the ‘muricans among us, do you remember the great depression?  It was before my time but stories around these parts has it that there were color fotography back then.  Billy gives us a cool link in 1930’s color phto’s (sic) that shows where we’ll be again in a few more months.  We love you Billy but don’t give up your day job to become a typesetter.  Your spelling sux worse than mine.

PJ’s Forum Round-up – 9.7.08

15

Welcome all!

This is my first foray into the contributing writer’s world so I hope you’ll hang in there.  I’ve put together a few forum sticky’s and comments for Steven in the past so I’m by no means a new member on the scene, maybe it’d be best to chalk me up as a member less posted.  Indeed, my first introduction to Steven was as a member of the Lockergnome crowd many years back.  Being the individualistic group we were, we banded together and decided to be individuals elsewhere.  When we figured out we had no place to go, Steven ponied up the forums and away we went.  That must have 8, 9 or even 12 years ago.

A bit about me.
I’m one of those guys that loves to delve into anything technology-oriented and I’m especially fascinated with how that technology affects our lives and can be turned towards good or bad uses.  In the real world I work as a technical security contractor for a major US government agency.  At work I get to conduct research into the negative side of technology and how it can be applied in inappropriate uses.  I’m also the father of two wonderful young ladies and I’m married to one of the most awesome ladies ever.  I say awesome because she really is.  My wife supports my interests in technological matters and is constantly feeding my addiction by encouraging me to keep buying new things.  That’s the point where I get to investigate the appropriate use of technology.  My interest in technology was sparked by my father back in the ’80s when he purchased a TI-59 programmable calculator.  I’ve eat, breathed and drank just about every iteration of home computer since then, including a few VAXs.  Along the way, it seems, I’ve learned a few things about computers, what goes wrong with them, and how to share the solutions, which made me a perfect fit in Steven’s little group of helpers.

So, to the point. Steven asked for a volunteer to put together a weekly round-up of what occurred in the forums. I stepped forward and raised my hand. Now I’m writing. I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoy the writing.

We have a rather special person in the forums. An unique individual with the odd ability to ask questions and subsequently answer them. Allow me to introduce to you our fellow member Joe. He’s asked so many questions and then answered them himself that we’ve turned his name into a verb. Now when folks ask a question and reply to themselves we say they’ve “Joe’d” the rest of the forum. Only, something strange happened recently. Joe asked a question and couldn’t answer it within the allocated post-post hour. He wanted to know the differences between 64- and 32- bit systems.  Five posts later, Pierre answered with one of the more succinct responses I’ve seen come from his fingers.  I’d tell you what he said but I would only do the man a disservice.  Go.  Read for yourself.  Learn from the human mainframe known as Pierre.

One of our hotter topics lately has to do with a problem posted by Moosepucky.  In his “Need LOTS of HELP!!!!!” post he states “I have had my main system go south.   Posts fine, SCSI / raid post fine(.)  (I)t gets to where the XP pro logo “should” appear and freezes.”  Despite the utter lack of mentioning any causal factors, he finally Joe’s the group and arrives at a solution all by himself.  Turns out he was using….  Well, again, I’ll let you read the thread.  Along the way, you’ll pick up a neat trick (or two) from Pierre, the human mainframe.

~ David ~ asks “I’m trying to understand exactly how a spooled print job progresses to help me troubleshoot a client’s setup. Could anyone confirm if I have this figured correctly?” in his post “Spooling – do I have this right?“  (It sounds more like one of those college book thesis papers….)  If spooling is your thing, take a look and see if you can help answer the question.  Me?  I prefer spooning.

There are many hot topics undergoing considerable action over in the Cage but you’ll have to join the forums and ask permission to enter the Cage.  It’s not a place for the faint of heart.  XCARLOSX, Infinidean, Chadman, Cleo and a few of the others will skewer you with their commentary.  You’ve been warned, beyond those doors lie dragons.

I would like to take the opportunity to point out one resource oriented section of the forums that seems to get underutilized:  “Tutorials, FAQ’s & Other Helpful Stuff“.  Your’s truely, Pierre (the human mainframe), and many of the other usual suspects have been our main contributor in this area but I’d like to challenge you, the blog reader, to check it out and see if you can contribute.  In this section of the forum, you’ll find some neat little tips, tricks and suggestions that you probably won’t find elsewhere.

Until next time:  “Have a great day!”

Watch your step folks….

1

Well as you can see the Christmas theme has been retired until next year and we’ve made some changes as well. First off I really want to thank Sadish for an excellent theme and for being so responsive to emails. I also want to thank Andrew who took some time to offer some helpful suggestions and ideas in his comments, they did help a lot.

There are still a couple of things I need to fix-up and a few more things I want to add but I’ll get to them over time. In the meantime I hope you like the new look and will like the coming concentration on content that I am going to try hard to provide.

Anyway enough blathering … on to the news :)

Paying the bills – WinExtra Style

0

Like most bloggers trying to pay the bills; as far as hosting and other related costs that are a part of trying to be a professional blogger, is something that we have to always find ways that will monetize the writing bug that has taken us full tilt. It doesn’t help that like many out there I’m not part of the A-List so my avenues of producing a revenue stream from advertising is pretty slim – meaning Google AdSense is about the only real method available.

However hell will probably freeze over before many of us see any acutal money from those AdSense blocks in our sidebars. This is especially true if we try to take our readers into consideration and not plaster the ads all over the page and as well it is true if we are just fresh into the fray and still in the readership building phase.

This leaves us to try and find other alternatives; with many  looking to the rapidly burgeoning field of text link ad networks. I had gone down this route as well for awhile but got fed up having to fill out form after form or being told I’d have to cough up a buck for the approval process – not bloody likely buddy.

Lunarpages.com Web Hosting

So I’ve taken the last couple of days an spent some time thinking about this; especually in light of the fact that I made more money from my Lunarpages (my hosting company) affiliate program than I have from Google in 3 months and that was just from one click to purchase.

One thing that I have always believed in is to support companies in anyway I can; which has usually been with the written word or word of mouth, so I have decided to change the advertising tactics used both on the blog and in the forums. Over the next week or so I will be going through my list of must have software and especially those with excellent service. Of those I will see which ones have affliate services that I can join and add to my inhouse rotation list of ads.

This way I get to support those companies who in my; or forum members, opinion are worth your dollars and in the process I earn a few bucks towards keeping WinExtra up and running. I have already started with the first affiliate ad for Sunbelt Software’s Kerio Firewall; which in my opinion is one of the best firewalls out there and you can’t beat the price of $19.95.

Hopefully going this route will provide a more targetted advertising to things covered by this blog and in our forums rather than the disjointed text ads served up by Google AdSense thereby helping you out more.

Also if you work for a software company that has an affiliate program for software that would be of interest to my readers; both the blog and the forums, you can email me at support @ winextra . com
