Microsoft gets some vindication in the way it matters most – money

0

I realize that it is all kinds of fun to make fun of Microsoft and call it a has been. Sure Vista didn’t do anything to help alleviate the stodgy monolithic reputation that it has gotten over the years but I get the feeling that the old Microsoft battleship has been sent back to the boatyard, given a fresh coat of paint and transformed into a quick nimble gun boat.

Leading this change without any doubt has been the release; and growing adoption, of Windows 7. Following on it’s heels is the upcoming release of their next generation smartphone version of Windows 7 which already has more than a few people excited; myself included. Hell if I could afford a new smartphone (and the price gouging data plans) I’d be counting down the days until it hits the stores.

To back up the feeling that Windows 7 is helping to herald in a new attitude at Microsoft is the release today of the sales figures for Windows 7 since its release. Jacob Friedman over at The Next Web has a few more of the details but the short form of the story is that there have been 90,000,000 copies of Windows 7 sold to date.

Microsoft finally backed their Windows 7 boasts up with numbers, and they’re quite impressive indeed.

Microsoft hadn’t provided exact sales numbers for Windows 7 until last night, when Microsoft CFO Peter Klein announced the sales figures at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. Klein revealed that Windows 7 has sold a massive 90,000,000 copies.

Not bad for slightly over four months on sale.

Not bad to say the least.

Nicely done Microsoft.

What’s with all those *32’s?

0

Since upgrading my hardware and deciding to go with Windows 7 64bit I’ve been playing around a little bit and seeing how different things are between 32bit and 64bit – if any.

I was glancing through Task Manager when I spotted this

32bit-64bit

And I realize that there are a lot of folks who have already made the switch to a dual core (or better) but I sure liked seeing this on the Performance tab

So you liked that God Mode secret huh? How about a bunch more?

1

god_mode God Mode … Windows … you’d almost think there should be a Steve Ballmer joke in there somewhere. However there isn’t just as there really isn’t a God Mode in Windows 7.

As both Ed Bott and our own Pierre pointed out this is nothing more than a GUID shortcut and has been around since Vista. The short story on this is that the GUID based shortcut (GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} ) populates the renamed folder with a folder full of available Control Panel tasks.

Nothing more really to see here right?

Wrong. Just to make our lives a little more interesting Ed Bott posted an additional list of 39 similar GUID shortcuts: 14 Win7 specific shortcuts and 25 Vista and Win7 ones.

The hidden Universal Windows 7 Install

1

ei_cfgremoved For those of you who stayed as far away from Vista as you could there was one thing about it that was one step up from Windows XP – the install DVD. Where with XP you had to have the install disk for your specific version Vista did away with that by having a Universal Install DVD.

What this meant was that all the different versions of Vista were shipped on one DVD and when you started the install it would ask which version you wanted to install. It was at this point after selecting it that you would enter in your serial number and carry on.

Well for all intents and purposes it would seem that Microsoft has had done away the Universal Install as nothing has been really said about the idea and when you start a Windows 7 install it doesn’t ask which version you want to install. Instead it just installs the version that is stated on the case.

A few geeky details about the Windows 7 boot-up screen

bootscreen

If you want a full breakdown of what went into creating the new boot screen for Windows 7 head over to Channel 9 for an interview with Rolf Ebling, the man behind to boot screen, or head over to the Engineering Windows 7 blog for a more highbrow explanation (which is where I found the graphic used above).

Sure Microsoft, kill off one of the best ideas you’ve had yet for consumers

0

theseguysthinkyouareanidiot When the launch of Windows 7 was announce Microsoft for the first time decided to offer a Family Pack deal. What the deal consisted of was three upgrade licenses for Windows 7 Home Premium edition for the single price of $150.00 (US dollars).

Considering that the stand-alone Home Premium edition retails for around the $110.00 mark this was a really good deal. The only problem is that Microsoft said it was only going to be available for a limited period of time.

Well according to a post by Ed Bott we’ve just discovered exactly how long that limited offer was meant to last.
