Windows 7 outreach program on Twitter

1

windows7

While Microsoft may not have made a big use of social media networks during the development of Windows 7 in the same way that they did with Longhorn/Vista they aren’t holding back as we head to the launch and beyond. Part of this out reach is going to be contests that plays off on the ‘7’ part of the version of Windows.

Such as the 7 pizzas to 7 lucky Twitter followers and this is only the beginning of the 7 weeks of prizes which will all be based on the number 7. The contest part of all this will come to an end on October 22, but that doesn’t mean the end of the outreach program.

Microsoft will be having a dedicated team of Windows 7 experts who will be available on Twitter to answer questions and help with problems. The idea is to try and make social media services like Twitter a solid resource center for users. From gaming to home networks these guys have been down that road with Windows 7 and will do their very best to help. Word is that sales pitches are not allowed at any point either.

The two Twitter handles being used are @mswindows and @windowslive. The team consists of Jeff D, Cody G, Ron S, and Josh T which would hopefully mean that you’ll be able to find help for Windows 7 at just about any time of the day.

Personally I think this is a great idea and even though I’m sure that they’ll be getting a lot of flack and other nonsense it is nice to see Microsoft going this route to reach out to their customers.

Search Twitter from Windows 7 Explorer

2

Back in February I wrote about what I thought was a killer feature in Windows 7. The feature is called federated search but what makes it such a killer feature is that anyone can create and share what is called Search Federated Providers. It is one of these providers that I wanted to talk about now since Windows 7 is just about to go retail.

While there are more than enough Twitter search services out there this Search Federated Provider lets you do your searches from within Explorer on your desktop. The only thing you need to do to enable this little feature is grab a snippet of code with an *.osdx extension and double click on it. Now you can create one yourself or you could head over to Chak’s Corner and have one created for you.

Once you have added your username and the number of results you want displayed click on the download button to get your twitter-search.osdx file.

osdx-file

After double clicking on the file, and possibly restarting Explorer, you will see the option for Twitter searches under the Favorites section of Explorer

To search either your Twitterstream, someone else, or the public timeline just select it in Explorer and then enter in your search term in the search box in the upper left of Explorer. Any results found, up to the limit you have entered when the osdx file was created, will be displayed.

It is still early days for Search Federated Providers so there aren’t that many available but I am sure that more will become available as we see more developers and other talented folk starting to play with the idea. In the meantime you can check in with the Windows Seven Forums and their dedicated page for this killer addition to Windows. They also have a section explaining how you can create your own.

picture4-thumb1 Just a quick housekeeping note here.

Up until today anything related to WinExtra and the WinExtra Community Forums has been posted to Twitter through my @stevenhodson (Shooting at Bubbles) Twitter account. After this post I will be switching those messages over to the new @WinExtra Twitter account.

So if you want to keep up to date with what is happening in the WinExtra world and our reporting on the world of Windows and Microsoft head over to the @WinExtra Twitter account and add us to your follower list. Unless you are a spammer or other really irritating form of Twitter scum I will follow you back.
