[SMF to bbPress] The conversion is done now for the real hard work

forums For the past six or seven months I have been wanting to find something to replace my install of SMF (Simple Machine Forums) – the software used to power our community forums – with something a little more modern. As well I needed something that would help pull both the blog and the forums together and allow for new things in the future.

It took some time but I finally settled on using bbPress as the replacement for SMF but there was one big problem that I had to beat before that could happen.

The agony of web forums and the road to conversion

changes For those of you who have been faithful readers of this blog for some time will also know that an integral part of WinExtra is our Community Forums which actually pre-date this blog. The forums themselves are only the more modern incarnation of the original WinExtra Newsgroups that I hosted on my own NNTP server for years before financial problems forced me to find a more cost effective (cheap) way of giving our community a home on the web.

Currently the forums are being powered by a forums package developed by Simple Machine Forums (SMF) and have for the most part served the purpose. However I have lately become very dissatisfied with SMF and started looking for alternatives.

WinExtra on Facebook

0

wx-facebook I had been planning on doing this for a while now but had held off until after I had finished the new design before buckling down and figuring out what I had to do to add WinExtra as a Facebook Fan page. As well I wanted to include some of the Facebook Connect option to the blog.

Well part of the plan is complete with the availability of the WinExtra Fan Page which is where you will be able to keep up to date with all the new stuff being posted to the blog while you are on Facebook. I’m still figuring out all what I can do there that will benefit WinExtra but for now why don’t you become a Facebook fan of WinExtra and we’ll find out together.

This is one of the many improvements and community building initiatives I have for WinExtra so pass the word – when it comes to Windows and Microsoft this is the place to be.

WinExtra gets a new look as part of the move forward

0

screenshot Well it took a little longer than I thought it might but step one of my plan to concentrate more of this blog went live during the night (just after 3AM EST) and on the whole I’m very happy with the new design.

I’m going to take a few days and let it settle and fix any bugs that might have crept in the design then it will be on to the other things that I want to put in place. One thing that people who might have seen the previous design will probably like is that I have reduced the number of ads being displayed.

Prior there were ads in between the posts on the main page. With the new look I have removed them. Next up will be integration with Facebook but I am taking that slow because I want to make sure I do it right and that it will actually be of some value to the reader.

Hopefully you will enjoy the new look but if you spot any problems just leave me a message in this post’s comments letting me know what it is and I’ll fix it pronto. Thanks to all my readers for their patience while I work on making WinExtra better.

Some good things coming to WinExtra

4

FTW-KidFor much of the past year I have been concentrating on my other blog, Shooting at Bubbles, where I talk about social media and Web 2.0 and as result WinExtra has taken a kind of back seat. Well that will be changing as I have finally gotten to a point with the other blog where it is just a matter of keeping fresh content being posted daily and as a result I am going to be spending a lot more time working on this blog.

Microsoft and Windows has always been my first interest and it feels good to be return to that as my main blogging thrust. I have quite a few ideas and plans as to what will be happening here and in the Community Forums. To start of the good news of new things is that I will be adding two more writers to the roster.

The first addition is a gentleman who likes to refer to himself as Pierre but those of us from the forums call him Mr. Super Computer. Pierre lives in Paris and as a result he will be bringing us news and opinion about Microsoft from a European perspective. Glad to have you on board good sir.

The second person isn’t so much a new addition but more of a return of a great and funny writer – welcome back PJ. Now PJ comes from a rather interesting background and will be covering security news as it relates to Microsoft and Windows. I am also sure, knowing PJ, that he will be posting his thoughts and opinions as it relates to those subjects.

As well I will be doing a lot of work on the site itself in regards to the backend and design. Along with that I will be looking at some ideas to add some new and interesting feature to make this a more interesting place to drop by and hopefully make a regular stopping point in your daily surf of the web.

I’m excited to be back here and doing more than just posting the occasional story. I am also looking forward to the future of the blog and I hope you the reader will stick around for the ride – it should be fun and interesting.

A new look for WinExtra

0

winextra-header

As part of my learning how Wordpress themes work and getting my taste for creating them by redesigning the theme for Shooting at Bubbles I decided to give WinExtra a bit of a make-over as well.

It’s nothing extra-ordinary but I’m happy with the new look and I hope regular readers of the blog will be be happy with it as well.
