Software FYI: Uberstaller – complete uninstaller

1

Just a quick note here – I tend to run across a lot of Windows software in my travels through the web and while I either don’t have time to test or have no personal use for them I know there are some who will. So from this point on I’ll be posting short bits about what I find if I think they might be of interest and they’ll always be tagged as Software FYI.

Uberstaller

If there is one thing I really dislike is when you uninstall software there is always garbage left behind, whether it be files or settings in the registry. Uberstaller claims to be able to solve that problem. When you use Uberstaller to uninstall a program it will also scan and then delete any files or registry settings it finds that are associated to the uninstalled program.

Use ClipGrab to download those streaming videos

0

I’ve lost count of the number of times that I’ve been watching something on the web and wished that I had a drop dead simple way to download a copy of the video to my local hard drive for later. Well thanks to the crew over at Addictive Tips I have found just that tool. It’s called ClipGrab and it works great.

Once you have it installed and running it will sit in the background until it notices a video link appearing on the Windows Clipboard. At which point, depending on how you configured it ClipGrab will start downloading the video at the end of that link.

ClipGrab supports the following sites at the moment:

  • YouTube.com
  • MyVideo.de
  • DailyMotion.com
  • Vimeo.com
  • MySpass.de

It supports the most eminent media formats.

  • MPEG4 (video)
  • WMV (video)
  • OGG Theora (video)
  • MP3 (audio only)
  • OGG Vorbis (audio only)

Grab your copy of ClipGrab at their website.

[UPDATED] – much ado about nothing – Google Chrome: chewing through resources

4

See below for update

Like, really, does Chrome really need to be using up so many resources for a measly three open tabs?

wth-chrome

UPDATE:

It seems that my post earlier asking why Chrome was using so many resources got one or two people a little upset as they were under the impression that I was trolling against Chrome.

Let me make it perfectly clear then – I love chrome. It is currently my favorite browser and I use it non-stop all day. Number two – I wasn’t trolling but rather just expressing some concern that Chrome was apparently being a little greedy when it came to using resources.

With much thanks to @Navarr both on Twitter and in the comments of the prior post I was reminded that the extensions used in Chrome will show up as separate processes as you can see below.

extension

As in this case I’m more than willing to have the errors of my ways pointed out to me and my thanks to @Navarr for doing so with class.

Sp please carry on with your day as there’s nothing to see here.

Need to join some FLV video files?

0

FLVJoiner One of the things about the video files that we download from the web is that they are usually the multiple video files that have been created from the original video file. So it can be kind of a pain to have to have to keep loading up all the separate files in order to watch a complete video.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to join all those separate files back together into one video file?

Well now you can with this handy little util from Ferret Soft called Andy’s FLV Joiner (FLV Joiner 0.4). There are no limits to the number of FLV files that you can join together and it has been tested to work on FLV1/H263, VP6, AVC/H264, and VFR flash video formats.

This is definitely one to add to the video toolbox.

[Updated] Preview of the browser choice screen in Windows 7 for Europe

0

zdnet-windows-7-browser-selection-screenMicrosoft has published a preview of the browser choice they have included in Windows 7 as a result of the European anti-trust decision. The screen offers 5 browsers in a “random order” (that’s the claim, anyway): Internet Explorer (obviously), Mozilla FireFox, Google Chrome, Opera, and Apple Safari. For the already installed systems, the browser choice will be offered – in Europe only – through Windows Update.

Update (February 24): the specific update was offered today for my wife’s Vista computer. I haven’t seen it yet for my Windows 7 one.

France is trying to make the Internet a safe place… at a cost

0

menottes At the end of last year and some legal pussyfooting, the law against illegal downloading of multimedia files (dubbed “HADOPI”, see my December 8 post) was finally voted.

Now the French government is busy discussing a new law, dubbed “LOPPSI” (sorry, I couldn’t find a link in English). This is an all-encompassing security law, but it has some dispositions about the Internet that could be very dangerous:

In order to fight pedophiles, the law will allow the police to remotely monitor and control the computers of suspects, and/or stealthily install keyloggers and other spying programs on them (the computers, not the suspects). Fortunately some Representatives have insisted that a judge be involved in the process, but the discussion isn’t over yet. The words “Big Brother” have been used repeatedly.
