XP users face a troubled future – even hard drives won’t want them

1

Even though the launch of Windows 7 has been a success with something like 90 million units sold there are still a whole bunch of folks out three who, for whatever reason, have stuck with XP. Now there’s nothing wrong with that after all once Service Pack 3 is install the venerable XP is a rock solid operating system. However the future must come to all of us at some point and such is the case with XP.

According to a news report from the BBC in early 2011 the hard drives we use in our machines will be undergoing one of the biggest changes in its format than has been seen in 30 some years.

Called advanced format this change will make it easier for hard drive manufacturers to produce bigger drives that use less energy.

A weekend project: build your own gaming rig

1

While there might not be any actual plans for this rig that you can download but I think anyone with a bit of imagination and access to a bunch of aluminum pipe should be able to pull this together.

So what are you waiting for – get bending some pipe.

A new use for your kid’s Easy Bake oven – fix video cards.

Over the years spent working with computers; some 25 odd years by now, I have seen all kinds of weird and wonderful things that people have done to t heir hardware. From overclocking to submerging in cooking oil the fixes and tweaks have run the gamut.

However this is the very first time that I have ever heard of baking a video card in the oven as a way to fix it.

For most of us when the video card starts to go it’s because – well it’s broken or just outright dead. Little did I know that; according to the vid card backing crew, small micro-connections between the chip and the board can get fractured over time because of the constant heating and cooling.

I have a weakness for hardware. They are my gadgets that I like to drool over and in the past dream about buying. Besides monitors my biggest weakness has to be keyboards. Not sure why but I’m always on the hunt for my ultimate keyboard.

A while back I was a loving the Apple slimline keyboard but not long after my attention was caught by a little beaut from Logitech. I ended up buying that one and still enjoy using it. That hasn’t stopped me from being distracted by other slim keyboard offerings.

Setting up and using FreeNAS

2

network I’ve been in the market for a media server for my home. Being the skinflint that I can be sometimes, I figured I’d make one of my own from spare parts lying around the house. At the time I had three desktops sitting around unused, and four laptops, a PS3, several handled devices and a desktop in use.

I was looking for a solution that would allow me to:

1. Collect all my music in one place and serve it out,
2. Collect all my videos in one place and serve it out to whatever device needs it,
3. Provide Network Attached Storage capabilities to the family,
4. Allow bittorrent downloads/storage,
5. Centralized server to log into from the internet and access my documents/media.

High-Speed Internet for everyone

1

finlandais_droit_internet

I just came across an interesting tidbit of information: the Finnish government wishes to make access to the Internet a “basic right”, enforceable by law, just like electricity and land telephone are. This is already true in Estonia, one of the so-called “Baltic countries”.

According to the Finnish radio Yleisradio OY (no, I don’t listen to it, I only read about it cheesy), Finland’s ministry of Transports and Communications has been put in charge of making sure every single inhabitant will have access to high-speed Internet: a minimum of 1 Mbps to start with, but a minimum of 100 Mbps by the end of 2015. Because most of Finland is sparsely populated, some areas will have to be served through wireless (WiMax) access points.
