Don’t judge a proggie by its UI

I downloaded this utility a few months ago out of necessity, and hesitated to do a review on it, despite how useful it is for 2 reasons. One, I’m not knowledgeable enough on the subject of audio/video formats to do it justice, and well, its back-end-of-a-dog-UGLY.

I mean that in the nicest way of course, and the completely free, fully functional Super © makes up for it’s daunting User Interface by being fabulously useful. It took me a few minutes to discover how to use it, and I’m still learning, but it’s now become a full-time resident on my start menu.

If you need a simple, yet very efficient tool to convert (encode) or play any Multimedia file, without reading manuals or spending long hours training, then SUPER © is all you need. It is a Multimedia Encoder and a Multimedia Player, easy-to-use with 1 simple click.

They’re not kidding, though the one simple click part took me a few minutes to get to. I haven’t found an audio or video format that it can’t read or convert, though I’m sure there are audio/videophiles out there there may find something it can’t convert or read, but they’ll have to try at it! Turn AVI files into 3G2 files for your video-enabled phone. Convert WAV to FLAC. OGG, AAC, WMA…the drop-down list is the height of my monitor. XVID and DivX support, audio bit rate control, sampling rate control, video quality, frame rate and aspect ratio controls…..Read here for a full explanation.

From the Super© site:

SUPER © “The Encoder” is the fastest and simplest tool to encode full
length movies to any other format without any time or function limitation.
NO trial or evaluation version of SUPER © but one unique Free to download and Free to use fully working version. SUPER © does NOT require any additional external codec to be installed, absolutely nothing. Necessary codecs are built in!
SUPER © does for FREE what other encoders CAN’T do for money.

Pretty bold claims, but they deliver. It’s fast, too. I converted an MPG to 3G2 file for my LG EnV2 wireless phone. The 700 megabyte mpeg took less than a minute to convert, and it worked flawlessly. Now, the sad part. First, if you utilize the integrated app update, it opens Internet Explorer regardless of your default browser setting. Irritating.

The interface isn’t what I’d call “pretty”, but it works. Simply drag any multimedia file into the Super© window, and select your output file type, and tweak the output settings to your liking, then click ‘encode’. Moments later, your converted file is ready. There are exhaustive options for everything you can imagine, take your time perusing the options menu to tweak things to your prefs. I did consider that we, as computer users, are a bit spoiled by eye-candy, applications that focus more on “ease of use” than actual “use”. Like me, I’m sure once you grow accustomed to the interface, you’ll give Super© a permanent home on your machine.

Important to notice that SUPER is:

A GUI to FFmpeg, MEncoder, MPlayer, x264, mppenc,
    ffmpeg2theora & the theora/vorbis RealProducer plugIn.

So essentially, everything they have is a GUI, so it's actually quite valid to evaluate them by it. All the hard work has been done in free as in beer and speech software.

I love SUPER! Best converter for sure. I actually cut their UI a lot of slack too because it's just soo…efficient. It does entirely too much to get rid of it and the UI isn't all that bad to interact with. However, at first glance I started not to download this program, but it was the only free software available to do several jobs in one app.

Excellent point, Rassie. While most of the core code is borrowed via open-source and the like, they DiD put it all together into one powerful converter. I'd be very pleased to see more effort on their part to streamline the UI. It's intimidating at first, and they'd likely get more followers if this could be improved, who might then actually purchase some of their other non-free releases.

It could possibly be a useful tool to have. However, if I can't download it from Firefox with No-Script enabled and if I have to jump through stupid hoops like clearing my cache then sorry, I'm just not interested.

I see no valid reason to enable the stuff they require to download a simple installer file. If you want to give it away then keep it easy.

I also run Firefox, and had no trouble downloading whatsoever. I also found No-Script to be far more trouble than it's worth, for reasons just like this. Don't blame Super© for your choice of FF plugins.
