SimCity Devs Do Reddit AMA – No SimCity 5 For Me

SimCity Devs Do Reddit AMA – No SimCity 5 For Me

I am a SimCity fan, with the exception of 4 and The Sims. I lost more hours playing the game years ago so when I heard that they were working on a new version of the game my heart began to beat a little faster.

The I heard about this “requires an Internet connection at all times” crap and I wept a little.

I’m guessing that I’m not alone it this as the Simcity developers took to Reddit to do an AMA to help alleviate any worries people might have had. Well, that didn’t work out so well as the team was taken to task almost immediately over this draconian DRM, which I found out was worse than I thought.

Apparently not only do you have to always be connected to the Internet while playing the game, even single player, but players would be funneled through EA’s terrible Origin service.

When asked about those gamers who have problematic internet connection this was Senior Producer Kip Katsarelis’ answer”

Sorry, I replied to it below. Not avoiding. Here was the reply…

“I actually just ran over to our online engineering team to get the latest info. We do handle “short” internet outages gracefully. Meaning, if your internet goes out while you’re logged in and playing the game, we can can recover gracefully. You shouldn’t notice a thing. “Short” is still being defined.”

I’m sorry but the fact that EA, and Maxis is “requiring” an always on Internet connection and the fact that I have to go through Origin has just wiped any thought of buying SimCity from my mind.

Stupid EA, just plain stupid.

Yup, Very sad. I bought D3, but I decided quickly that it would be the last “always on” game I buy. I wasted a good portion of my life on SimCity games….all the way back to the the N64 version.
