Does anyone know what this is? According to a rumor-monger I know, this device will record everything you type (including your passwords, etc…) and may be in use in some web cafés…

Google image search turned it up right away. It is a keylogger.

Don't use old computers at internet cafes. Better yet, follow the cable and if you find one, unplug and take it.

Classic keyboard logger. Using winders OSK will defeat them. So you can type in bullshit characters and then use the mouse to type in the password if you know one has been put on a machine your using.

No, she received a warning about that device from an acquaintance whose knowledge of computing can be engraved on the head of a pin with a blunt nail – but he spreads these warnings as though they were gospel nevertheless…

It doesn't really matter, as neither of us uses web cafés, but my curiosity was piqued. Our friend will be thrilled to learn he was correct, for once

Really, though, how many modern cafes are going to use PS2 connectors? USB is all the rage these days.

Yes, that's what I was implying in my post above (old computers) but I suppose this means an even smaller and less obtrusive dongle to accomodate USB.

I've seen a few real-world variations of both attacks mentioned in this article plus one other using audio recordings of keyboards....

Aye. I haven't seen one of those in quite a while. Spotted them in a local copy shop that rented time on shop machines on a few occasions, but that's been 10+ years, iirc.

Well, I'm at least safe from these two: my computer is behind an UPS and there's no line-of-sight to my keyboard from outside

Pierre, had a repair person or cleaning person person in your apartment lately? Stealth cameras are quite small and unobtrusive. Do you share walls with another apartment? Does your keyboard emit any kind of electromagnetic signal? Do photographs with your face unaccountably appear on on the internet? Are you becoming paranoid yet?

My apartment does share a wall with another, but that wall is load-bearing and quite thick (they knew how to build, 3 centuries ago ); as for EM noise from the keyboard, it's a possibility, of course, but it happens that my keyboard has a metallic frame, and is grounded through the USB connector…
