A local man, literally 3 or 4 blocks from several of my family members, killed his 2 young daughters,, then himself yesterday.
Anti-gun nuts would be quick to blame firearms. Religious nuts would be quick to say he needed Jesus. What's the real thing going on here? Why do people do these things to each other? It has been suggested that things like this have always occurred, but we frequently didn't hear about it before satellites, Internet, etc.
Social decay? Moral rot? Fluoride in the water?

Could be many things. Acute depression, revenge, mental disorder, etc. or a combination of them. In my experience people with acute clinical depression are unable to focus beyond themselves and can't see the consequences of their actions. Thus someone who is acutely depressed may consider suicide by a head on collision with another vehicle and be unable to comprehend that this would also be murder.
Obviously firearms are not the cause but are a lot easier to use than other methods and are immediately available in too many households.
It's certainly tragic whatever his twisted reasons were. It's likely to leave his ex with a load of guilt on top of her grief, too.
I'll bet that he was depressed. There will probably be more to the story when his autopsy is completed.
In this case, it's usually due to a loss of hope. Once an individual loses hope and things seem to have no solution, then it's a very small step to justify why the rest of the family needs to die. The justification being that they shouldn't have to suffer and one has a responsibility to ensure loved ones go to a better place before they go.
That or they owed the mafia a lot of money.
A third option is that the father was deeply depressed and tried to lash out at his wife in the worst way possible.
The deaths, contrary to what one individual in the article stated, are not random. They are sad, unfortunate and tragic but not random. The father really needed help. What a shame he couldn't find it and the girls paid the price.

Depression is treatable, but it has to be diagnosed correctly, and treatment takes a couple of years at least – and is expensive. BTDT.

It takes therapy but there are drugs. I've been dealing with this for about three years now as one who gets called: "Good bye ...", "I going to get on the freeway and have a head on ... (Kinda hard as it's a divided highway.), "I'm parked next to the railroad tracks" (That's really serious), etc. The last 4 or 5 months have been calm, though, but every once in a while I see the symptoms start. I think that it will never be over but the drugs and therapy is working.

It probably depends on the family/friends environment. I was cured of my depression in about 18 months with therapy and medication. My wife and friends were very supportive, which, IMO, helped more than therapy.

Given the billions of people on the planet, the incidence of this kind of thing is extremely rare. This was close to home for you. This kind of thing has been happening since the dawn of time. Some people just snap. They don't need a gun or an excuse. We want to know why it happens for the same reason we strive to find order in chaos. Sometimes people just snap.

That was basically my thinking as well, and it applies to many things. In that fashion, instantaneous communication and the info overload we have now isn't doing us any favors.
Also, thanks for getting what I was really asking.
