I have a wireless router for my FIOS connection. I have my lap top (with Vista) connected Wifi but the router is connected by a cat5 to my desktop puter ( with XP). I need to move the desktop up stairs and the router needs to stay down. What do i need to buy to make the desktop wireless? Something that just plugs into a usb port would be nice.

Try this:

I feel kind of stupid because after poting here I did a google and found the info you gave Nate thanks. I'll look into the need for the cable type. The router is being moved to the back downstairs family room and the desktop to the front upstairs guest room. I'll bring the laptop up after the move and check the reception.

Best to have a direct connection for the desktop. With fios though, the speed reduction may not be that bad. Any usb adapter should do the trick. An extension is good, but moving around the antenna and/or router may also work.

I would move the router upstairs but ther is no cable up there. There is a second one in the back room though. The house isn't that big it should do ok.

<snip>I agree with the first part of the statement, not necessarily with the second one. It very much depends on what throughput has been subscribed (5Mbps, 25 Mbps, or more) and what the maximum rating of the wireless router is, as well as the propagation of the wireless signal. In addition, an USB NIC gobbles up CPU cycles and may have a negative influence on overall performance. An internal WiFi NIC would be preferable to an USB one, if pulling a cable from the router to the desktop isn't practical. As you can see, you've got a wide choice.

I will use it more for working with files and photos and such The monitor is nicer to edit things with than the somewhat glarey lappy. But I will need to DL some stuff. Moving a cable there is pretty much out of the question.
