<From now on they won't call tech support, they'll call you.>
I don't fall for that crap any more...well except for my neighbor Bob. He can never find anything he saves on his computer. Telling people how to solve their problem is hardly ever good enough. They want you to do it for them. (and these are all old guys with nothing to do anyway)
The same thing use to happen with handyman stuff especially involving heavy lifting or use of my truck. My standard line now is: 'Sorry, I have a bad shoulder'

That comic describes a large segment of my life.
Latest installment: My mother's brand new ASUS laptop. (I told my stepdad what to buy)
She wanted to go from the bedroom to the living room, so she drapes the power cord over the keyboard (cord right up next to the hing) and squeezes it shut. She calls me and asks if I know why her screen is all rainbows and stuff, and wants to know if I can fix it.
I sent her the address for ASUS repair. Fixed.

What matters is not the years in one's life but the life in one's years.

I have found that tech support people, for the most part, don't know anything. It's usually easier if I just fix it myself. The two times I actually called tech support for anything, I knew more than they did.

It's usually because they have to follow the script they have, and regardless of whether they understand the problem, the goal is to get you off the phone asap.

I had a problem on my mac. I had moved a large system database from my external disk to the system disk to send the external disk out for repair. When It came back and I tried to move it it looked as if it were being moved but it couldn't be. Found out I should not have moved it in the first place. So I started a new db on the external disk and attempted to delete the old db. Failure. The tech did help me, took a long time to get to the point where the db was being deleted. During the process I suggested that I just get into the OS, cd to the folder, and do a rm -R. He was not familiar with that so...
Last week I found that I couldn't empty my trash. The files all appeared to have the right permissions so I did the rm -R command. No problem and quite quick.
I still have no idea why the files couldn't be deleted.

Maybe the files were locked by the OS.
Regardless, I find this video goes a long way to explaining all things Mac.
To put it nicely: "Mac killed my inner child."

My niece owns – and uses – a MacBook. On her previous machine (also a laptop from Apple), she managed to move her whole profile to the bin just before shutting down. After she rebooted, of course she couln't access her files anymore… she couldn't even log in. Why, even with Win95 you couldn't do such a stupid mistake, the vital files were locked by the OS!

One of my favorite bumpers stickers reads "Yes, this is my truck. NO, I won't help you move."
