Windows 7 Pro
I have a 2gb sd card in a portable USB reader. Works fine in all but the Win7 machine. It reads fine until I make a couple clicks through the directory structure, then the card "blanks". Removing the reader and plugging it back in starts the same process over. Halp?

Can you try it with another card reader? The one you're using may be marginally incompatible with Win7… or possibly it's the card's fault.

Sometimes it's your own USB drivers that are messed up too. I like to rip them out on occasion for a fresh install. Sometimes that clears things up. I rip up the root device and all the others go away and reinstall.
