What are some good freeware programs and websites for finding information about IP Addresses? I used to use something called Dr something or other, or maybe it was named after some detective, but I don't remember.. Anyway, I've been floundering since dnsstuff.com went to the paid mdoel and would like to have something good to use.

Side note, be sure your gmail password is secure. One of our employee's personal gmail account got compromised by a Nigerian scammer. The hacker reset the password and sent messages begging for money to every contact in the persons account.

This one will take you down pretty close.

Another one I use is:

http://www.melissadata.com/lookups/iplocation.asp

For passwords use a password vault and have it generate random 10-14 digit upper/lower alpha/numeric passwords using special characters.

I have used this one for a number of years now http://keepass.info/

Something like this is hard to crack: dZ9#RDuj/Q*7!p

samspade.org is probably the site you were thinking of.

There are several command line programs you can use that will give you pretty much all the info you may want:
nslookup
tracert
ping
blahblahblah

One website I like is kloth.net

Just search for DNS tools and you'll get bunches of sites.

There used to be a downloadable version of Samspade that worked very well. Possibly it's still available on some d/l sites?

Thanks for the information.. It was the download version Samspade I was thinking of.

I have been using keepass for the past couple of years. I've passed it on to a few people, one of which forgot their password to open it. I thought about setting up this person with it, but I don't know if they can handle it.

You can run it without a master password (starts and runs). Not as secure but a little harder to lock yourself out that way

I use Password Safe to store my passwords. Not as sophisticated as KeyPass, but adequate for my needs. Like KeyPass, you can use it without a master password. I store my confidential files – including the Password Safe store – in an encrypted virtual disk (with TrueCrypt). I use the same passphrase for both, just so I don't forget it…

How about creating a drop box account?

Then use True Crypt to create an encrypted virtual disk inside the drop box account.

Now you can keep your secret stuff safe in the cloud.

Apart from the transparent operation, DropBox is no better that MS's "SkyDrive" – and I fully expect transparent operation through the "Device" feature of MS Live Essentials once it's out of Beta. Furthermore, MS offers 25GB for free (5GB in the automatically synchronized "drive"), vs. only 2GB with DropBox.
