trying to replace it with a Facebook Like button but the implementation is not playing nice with the theme (not that plugins ever seem to with custom themes)

actually ... no. The reason I say that is because I know the roadmap for bbPress and for people running Wordpress blogs bbPress will be a nice addition as work is being done to have it as a core plugin of WP. This means access to the functionality of Wordpress itself as well as a lot of ease of use - especially from an admin point of view.
Do I wish they would move faster - you bet'cha
