A friend of mine just damaged the processor in his Acer computer (he didn't know to use the lever on the ZIF socket!
). The processor had come out with the heatsink, which he took out to clear the vanes because they were so clogged with dust, he just couldn't blow it out.
Apart from a dust-induced slight overheating, the computer worked perfectly so far.
The processor is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (@ 2.2 GHz), which of course isn't available any more. The motherboard in the machine is an MCP61SM-AM, made by Foxconn and based on the nVidia MCP61S chipset. Unfortunately, the Foxconn documentation for the equivalent retail mobo doesn't specify what processor frequency it supports.
Can he put an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (@ 2.5 GHz) in that machine, because that's the lowest frequency available for this type of processor today? Or should he consider purchasing a new computer?
Thanks for any hints
