I've finally convinced my parents to stop buying those "bookshelf" form factor computers with all the proprietary crap in them. The PSU went out in this latest one and they aren't made anymore, the reman they bought (80 bucks for a 250w psu) was DOA.

Anyway, the single request they made was that the case be one of those ones that lay on their side...it's been so long since I've seen one, I can't even remember what they're called. Are they still made, and if so, know where I can find one that can be filled with standard components?

Or a full size desktop case?

The full size, trying to stay away from micro-atx. Building this for maximum upgrade capability, and the micro-atx boards lose a lot of ports and such.

Wow, pricey, huh? Still, it's what they want, thanks for the direction.

    You want pricey? Here's a hint: http://www.origenae.co.kr/en/products_htpc.htm

You can build a whole supercomputer with the price of one of these cases

Do they want something "pretty" or functional?

here are some web pages of case manufacturers (you can search pricing once you find something that fits)

I am sure that there are more than these but it is a start.

It seems that most of the horizontal desktop chassis are now targeted to home entertainment systems not computers.

That's been my finding as well. Most of the htpc chassis' have limitations that prevent me from attaining my "maximum upgradability" goal. (limited space for HDD's, or no space for card readers, or proprietary PSU's, or no space for larger vid cards etc etc)

I'm really trying to talk them out of this.

I agree about avoiding proprietary PSUs or other parts, but for the rest… Do you parents really care that much about upgradability, or do they even need it? You're building a machine for their needs, not yours (unless you expect a quick inheritance? ). Most HTPC cases will accomodate two HDDs and one optical drive. With 1TB or 2TB disks, that should be adequate for several years' worth of video and music downloads or rips, in addition to emails and family letters. And unless they're hard-core gamers, they probably don't give a hoot about larger video cards, either. A fanless ATI Radeon 4670 or nVidia 8600GS with 512MB VRAM is quite adequate for displaying blu-ray movies in full HD.

You might also want to check out thrift and junk stores. Lots of old computers end up there. You could rip the insides out and just use the old case.

Pierre: They're only in their 50's, and are getting pretty interested in the "computer thing". They now have 2 computers, and recently set up a simple home network for them. You may be right, though, and they don't really have anything I want that badly, anyway.

Dean: Good call! An older computer would have a floppy, which is the same size as a card reader, too.

This is what I use for my HTPC. It's kind of long to put on the desk with the traditional "monitor on case" desktop implementation. This review will give you an idea. I got mine pretty cheap at Fry's

Found that very case at newegg for 40. Not bad. Some reviews call "bullsh**" on fitting a full size ATX board in it, (that vid review used the P57A which is a micro) but we shall see. Looks good.

The CM web site says atx or micro MB fits.

You may have to choose your PS carefully to make sure it is not physically too large if you are going to use an ATX MB

My MB was a tight fit. I had to be creative to fit another drive. I thought I'd have problems with my PS but it fit. Not the best implementation. A little to deep but it works and I love my HTPC. I sent a pic of mine to your email addy Bill.

I'd crack it open and show you but I'm not ready to tear it down for my remodel work I need to do here shortly. Oh and the cheesy rubber feet they give you suck. Go to the hardware store and get some better ones.
