Dell XPS 200. One of those "slim" units. It shuts down from time to time, very hot inside case. Case fan and PS fan both going. Cleaned out well. Keyboard driving me insane. Wish I could touch type. That is all.

How is the CPU usage? It isn't maxed out is it? How about the CPU cooler? Not blocked? Is the heat sink seated properly?

Is it possible that running hot while it was blocked up baked something?

Yes, it's possible. Have him check for bulging capacitors, for one thing. Also, did he completely remove the old thermal paste before he "re-gooped" the heatsink? I have found that nail polish remover is very efficient for this – and much cheaper than the "professional" products sold in computer shops.

Also, yes, he's a very meticulous old bird, I can say with certainty that thing looked brand-new before he re-pasted it.
