I have a Sapphire video card with ATI chipset in my new computer, it's totally supported in W7. All I can think of is that you may have an incompatibility with the Adaptec's firmware, which wouldn't be detected by the compatibility check (it actually only tests installed software – programs and drivers). There's also a known XP/Vista limitation with RAID arrays: the system partition may not exceeed 2TB. I have no documentation about whether this limitation also applies to W7. I also don't know for sure whether this limitation concerns the partition that contains the boot files, or the one that contains the OS files, or both, in case they're different partitions.

Total drive size of the raid 5 arrays are c:\ 136 gig d:\ 276 gig so don't think the 2TB bug applies

I may see if I can find an updated bios for the controller.

It just seems odd that vista does fine until I apply the first service pack. I have been running Vista for well over a year. I don't recall trying to run SP1 before but now that the drive has been formated a couple of times there is no way to tell what was what before I started.

It's not that big of a deal. It was time for me to switch over to the laptop for the trip up to the great white north in a week or so. It would be nice to have a running computer when I get home though.....

Have you tried Adaptec support? Maybe it's a known issue? (Which doesn't necessarily mean it's solved <g>)

    Back running vista (pre sp1)

I found a later bios for the raid controller but it has me baffled. It says to copy to floppy but one of the files in the group is LARGER than the available space on a floppy?!?!?!?

Can't seem to get an answer from adaptec on this.

The d/l page specifically states you need to copy each .ufi file to a separate floppy. From what I see, the largest file is 1,420KB. A floppy holds 1,440 KB, so, what's the problem?

I get an error saying not enough space when trying to copy that file. I guess I need to try it using a dos window instead of within windows and see if that works (thought of this after posting and shutting the workstation down).

I think that the bios update will be the windows 7 install fix as the driver that I had to use for vista was 5.2.0 and this bios is also 5.2.0 (current bios is 4.x.x). I burned the MB bios a while ago and it is still current.

I may hold the record for the oldest current OS running hardware (if I can get win 7 to install). MB, both CPUs, ram, and drives all went online in 2001.

To upgrade to vista I had to replace the video card and the raid controller but everything else was compatible (surprise).

Considering its age it is still an acceptable performer, Dual zeon (dual core), 4 gig ram, scsi 320 - 15k rpm drives, raid 5. The 533 fsb is very out of date.

This is strange. Did you freshly format the floppy in a command prompt? If not, it might contain a (hidden) recycle bin that eats up some space. Try rebooting to safe mode before formatting the floppy and copying the file, it may help.

    Woo hoo.....

The floppy had too many bad sectors. I grabbed another one, formatted, and the large file copied fine.

The raid controller bios/firmware update was the ticket.

One tidbit I feel the need to share, Win7 on a laptop. If you inadvertently tick the wrong box in 'accessibility options', the keyboard shuts off. My mom brought her new Asus to me in a fret. Took me nearly 20 minutes to figure it out.

Stupid. How does turning off the keyboard make the computer easier to use?
