After listening to Steven's pod cast I am going to finally install my copy of windows 7 pro. I pre-ordered copies for all of the computers and they have been sitting on the shelf taunting me to get started for a long time now.

I cringe as I have too much hardware and software to install.

I always to a format and fresh install and invariably I forget to back something up and end up fighting like mad.

taking into consideration that most of my hardware is vintage 2001 (space odyssey models) this move from Vista to 7 is going to be a lot of fun (NOT)

    I have backed up:

    Outlook address book
    Favorites/bookmarks
written down my network credentials and passwords
    exported my nntp profiles

So what have I forgotten to do?

I have 2 raid 5 arrays c:\ is OS and software d:\ is all data, email storage. There is nothing stored on the c:\ drive except installed software and system configurations.

Can I get my hardware (especially the scsi raid drivers) off of my d:\ drive or will I need to make a floppy/cd driver disk?

I hate upgrading. I should never have purchased windows 7

AFAIK you can read your drivers off any connected drive (including network ones if you were doing an in-place upgrade instead of a clean install, and USB drives of any type).

Moving from Vista to W7 is fairly trivial, especially if you don't use Windows Mail for email.

In order to save some time, you should backup the following folders: "C:\Users\{your login}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook" (this is where your PST file lives), "C:\Users\{your login}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook" (this is where your address input helper lives) and "C:\Users\{your login}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Signatures" (which contains your Outlook signatures). On the new computer, once you've installed Office again, start Outlook in order to create its default files, then close it and copy the 3 folders to the same locations, overwriting the newly created files. When you open Outlook again, you'll have all your old emails, calendar(s), contacts and signatures (you'll need to re-create your email accounts and re-assign signatures to accounts). Don't lose you email account passwords!

If you use WM for NNTP on Vista and intend to use Windows Live Mail on W7 for the same purpose, you should also backup "C:\Users\{your login}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail". Copy it to the same location *before* launching WLM for the first time, and WLM will import your WM account settings and data automatically.

Thank you Pierre. You da man....

I keep my PST files on my d:\ drive but did not know about the roaming folder. I did a csv dump of my address book.

Email addresses have always given me fits on an upgrade. I always forget to add at least 4 or more of them then once I remember I find a lot of ticked off people trying to contact me

I wish there were a way to just dump a list of them so that I know that I get them all added back in.

Is there anyway to dump outlook 2007 message rules? This is another headache. Just when I get them the way I need them it is time to delete them and start all over again

Yes, there is a way: in Tools, Rules and alerts, click on the "options" button. And BTW, this has gone away in Outlook 2010, which is IMO a very stupid design decision.

Or from MS execs – which amounts to the same thing

So what have I forgotten to do?

Have you checked the "Use by" date" ?

On second check, I located the "options" button for the Outlook 2010 rules. It's been moved to an inconspicuous location, which explains why I didn't notice it at first. Sorry for the confusion

I found from experience that the Easy Transfer Wizard is vastly improved in Win7. So you may want to consider using it as a secondary option for MS/Win specific software - including Windows Live Mail (Never use Windows Mail - it's going to be going away at some point anyway). It is also available in Vista and while not bad and does work it's not as good as the Win7 upgrade to the utility

    Well I chickened out

I installed 7 on my laptop first. Selected the format option and even though it was an upgrade it "knew" that there already was an install of windows so did not ask me to go find an old CD and shove it in.... nice

Nothing works on the laptop but at least I have windows 7

That's very strange. If Vista works on the lappie then Win7 should be fine and faster as well.
