Back door passwords built-in?

From personal experience, I can tell you that the only sure-fire way to bypass the BIOS password is the physical reset way, which is readily available only for desktops. Very few laptops have a reachable dipswitch or jumper, and taking them apart isn't for the casual or ill-equipped individual (and neither is putting them together again
). I recently had to de-louse an HP laptop that had been donated, and I needed to change some BIOS settings, but the system password was set. I tried all known backdoors to no avail (and I had to do a cold boot every three tries).

There are any number of programs that will reset the BIOS password. Even those passwords that are stored in EEPROM such as in laptop computers.

But, you need to be able to boot from a floppy (or an USB key) in order to use them. And in my case, that wasn't possible unless I changed the boot order in the BIOS – CATCH22!

Ayup. That's where I like to modify the boot order with a hammer. Ball-peen works better than a jeweler's.

Lump hammer works even better
