Downloads OK, but won't display inline…

Now this is interesting: in IE8, the inline picture won't display, but shows as the dreaded red X. In FF 3.6, the word "content" appears instead of either the red X or the inline pic. And in Opera 10.1, both the word "content" and the red X display.
That's because I was fooling around with img tag. Upload seems to work, but what I want is a <insert image> feature.
I have tried in both Chrome and IE8 - no inline and the download is corrupted in both.
Hopefully I'll get some time to work on it today at some point but like I said half the battle is won in that the files are getting uploaded to the right folder and is getting entered into the right database table.
My grandsons - embedding works fine though
Now an upload - diff pic as the last is too large.

corrupted
BTW I just wanted to show off the grandies!!
Never saw a cat share a cell phone with parakeets before…
I don't get why I can d/l the pix all right, but you can't
I can view the grandson's piccy but nothing else. The other stuff just shows as links.
What is different?

that one of the grandkids is linked to using the img tags and the others which are just showing as links are ones that have been uploaded.
the thing is the uploaded ones end up where they are suppose to on the server (thank goodness) and with the right entry in the database. however when they are supposed to be displayed on the page they aren't displaying and the download links seem to work for some (Pierre) but for others the downloaded image is corrupted
