The new tab / new window is just using the default target=_blank that is the web standard (although being deprecated) for all browsers and links.
Actually the whole opening of links in the same windows or in a new one is a discussion that I had years ago with Noshi and it is also one that is constantly being debated within the web developer communities.
Just as there are a large number of people who hate the links opening in the same window there is an equal number is seems that who hate them being launched in a new window.
Hence the reason why I want to have the "external launch icon" beside the actual url as this will make both camps happy - which makes me happy 
Er.. one more thing - no Calendar? I did use to rely on it for members' birthdays - not everyone had notified me so didn't always have the necessary info in my BBook. If you don't want the Calendar, perhaps we could go back to the old way of asking people to email me said info. Heh I need to clean up the BBook anyway.
I'll see what I can do about finding a plugin to help with that so don't count it out yet.
