I have a windows 7 zCalendar gadget on my desktop machine and would like to put one on my laptop.

MS has dropped support for the desktop gadgets.

Anyone know where this one went off to? All my links for it are DOA.

Any other suggestion as far as a calendar for appointments/events ?

Messes made. Jobs left undone. FREE estimates.

How about a stand alone calendar recommendation then?

Does not need to be a gadget but need some form of reminder to pay bills.

The best-known desktop calendar is a shareware program named Rainlendar. It has reminders and is highly customizable. It can also interface with the calendar in Outlook, if you have that (although if you did, you wouldn't be looking for a calendar with reminders, would you? )
