I mostly ate aboard ship while in Britain; the itens I saw on menus didn't appear all that appetizing.

What's wrong with fish and chips?
Fish and chips, blackened a bit by the newsprint ink? Not bad, really.

The ink and a good swab of vinegar were what blotted out the lack of taste

And salt, don't forget the salt! And then the beer; the beer because of the thirst from the salt and the F&C. And then more beer because with friends one is not enough. Then more F&C to balance the electrolyte loss from all that beer and bond with new friends. Then beat the shite out of that wanker who says the Manchester football team is good. Damn, the F&C are good!
The seaside merchants in Brighton weren't allowed to sell any beverage with an alcoholic content. Plus, I was under legal age anyway, so I had to substitute beer with reconstituted orange juice (judging by the taste, it was made from frozen concentrate and used toilet water) from Sainsbury's or Lyon's

Wow, you can name the provenance of toilet water! Didn't know you had that expertise which must have come from tasting lots of samples..
I told you it brought back some painful memories…

Our favorite was sausage and chips... Deep fried like the fish. I bet it was very bad for us but it was the best food we had when there.
I sure would have tried that if I encountered it but perhaps it became popular after June of 1959, the last time I was in Great Britain.
Jeez, you got to be close to a hundred yo.

I never encountered that either, and my first visit to UK was in 1957 (the year the Shadows made top of the charts with "Apache"). And I'm not that close to 100 – yet.
