You're right, I had been putting my finger on the shortcut or widget, but then immediately moving it down. Or I had been clicking it.
I went to Costco (where I bought the phone), the guy there showed me how to do what I wanted to do, plus he showed me some more cool stuff about Swype. I never want to tap, tap again after using swype!
