The big drawback I've experienced with this software is that it forces me to check every sub-forum to catch up on unread topics instead. The RSS feed, as random as it shows new posts, is actually the easiest way for me to do a quick scan of all the unread posts (assuming they all hit the feed) and decide what I want to, or haven't read. It works similarly to the "New Posts Since Last Visit" page except it doesn't group the posts by thread.

Since you mentioned it, I tried Opera, and it does show up there <img src="http://www.winextra.com/forums/my-plugins/smiley-choice/Default Smiley/icon_eek.gif" title="8O" class="bb_smilies" /> <img src="http://www.winextra.com/forums/my-plugins/smiley-choice/Default Smiley/icon_confused.gif" title=":?" class="bb_smilies" />

Shows up fine here in FF and SeaMonkey BUT New doesn't show up in IE 8 for me either. I do see the Fire sign (Hot Topic?) in all browsers. Latest updates are installed for IE - this wasn't tested before updating, maybe that holds the clue?

Just a little addition.

The small fire icon you might see beside Topic Titles both in the sidebar Latest Discussions on the Main Page as well as the individual Forum sections is meant to highlight topics with the higher number of replies over a certain period of days.

Right now I have it set to 5 or more replies posted over the prior two day (from viewing date). These can be adjusted for more replies needed to trigger it and the number of days covered.

Just a little something.

I hadn't opened any links until after I saw your post. IMO, you're right, I *much* prefer them to open in a new tab as opposed to the same window!
If it makes you feel any better, I like that links open in a new tab. I prefer that to a new window, and much, much, much prefer it to the same window.

phreeBase said:
I just can't pin down exactly what it is, but I find this forum to be the most difficult to keep up to date with.

  <img src="http://www.winextra.com/forums/my-plugins/smiley-choice/Default Smiley/icon_sad.gif" title=":(" class="bb_smilies" /> <img src="http://www.winextra.com/forums/my-plugins/smiley-choice/Default Smiley/icon_question.gif" title=":?:" class="bb_smilies" /> <img src="http://www.winextra.com/forums/my-plugins/smiley-choice/Default Smiley/icon_sad.gif" title=":(" class="bb_smilies" />

I used to be able to control everything I needed to do from the unread posts page - unread posts/threads would remain unread until I read them, and once read they would be 'marked' as such. Now I need to subscribe to posts or something. Rather than a properly threaded forum this feels like a string of blog comments.

If I was busy and didn't have time for jokes and graphics, I could come back to them later. Now it all feels like a lucky dip.

To a degree your comment about a string of blog comments is correct given that bbPress is a side project of Matt Mullenwig the man behind Wordpress. That said though I I am not really seeing how the current layout of individual post threads is any different than the way they were on the SMF-based forums. The flow of first post and all replies is exactly the same. Neither the SMF-based ones or these have true threading (there is a plugin that will supposedly give this but due to the drastic difference between this theme and the standard theme which the plugins look for I am reluctant to try it - we'll see).

One thing I will do is see if I can find something to provide the Unread page look you mention and see if that helps.

The one thing you can to to mark posts that you want to come back to later is add the post (and following replies) to your Favorites - http://screencast.com/t/NTJlYzM5MWEt - this way you can come back later and read them.

Pierre said:
I'm getting used to it too, but I do wish Steven got the "new posts" thing right. Threads with new posts are highlighted in the individual forum pages, but the "latest" posts" list no longer displays a highlight, nor does the forum list (on the home page). <img src="http://www.winextra.com/forums/my-plugins/smiley-choice/Default Smiley/icon_eek.gif" title="8O" class="bb_smilies" />

huh?

I realize that the "New" icon in the Latest Discussions list isn't there but the New Icon for the Forums List on the main page is working just fine - http://screencast.com/t/Nzg3YmMxO

The problem is that the plugin is ideally meant for a pre 1.0.2 version of bbPress and the author had a falling out with with the team behind bbPress (which btw is a Wordpress owned project) and isn't updating her plugins. It doesn't help that she was also one of the most prolific of the plugin authors (as well as the best).

The plugin as it stands has limited options for customization and in the case of the main page display it seems it is an either or situation.

Now from what I understand by lurking in the bbPress IRC channel and the developer chat meetings that are going on there will be hooks added into the core code of bbPress to enable this information to be more accessible to 'theme' creators.

It also doesn't help that in my effort to try and make this version match up as close as possible to what a old-style forums looks like I have completely customized the layout which you can see when compared against the default bbPress layout - http://bbpress.org/forums/

I haven't stopped trying to improve what I have put together here but my major problem is a lack of knowledge about PHP (and to lesser degree bbPress code)- I know a little enough - just enough to make me very dangerous <img src="http://www.winextra.com/forums/my-plugins/smiley-choice/Default Smiley/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />
