Me, too. There have been both spectacular successes and failures for Mars missions.

An yet we have the Japanese forging ahead trying new ideas like the Deep Space Vehicle that is being propelled by solar sails

http://www.physorg.com/news191565225.html

The flexible sails, which are thinner than a human hair, are also equipped with thin-film solar cells to generate electricity to create “a hybrid technology of electricity and pressure”, Tsuda said.

“Solar sails are the technology that realises space travel without fuel as long as we have sunlight. The availability of electricity would enable us to navigate farther and more effectively in the solar system.”

Exactly!!!! Though visiting the moon (for example) initially wasn't of a DIRECT benefit, (there was nothing of immediate USE there) the technological advances that occurred as a RESULT of the missions are still being reaped to this day. When we stop aspiring to new goals just because we don't see the precise benefit to our wallets or some such, we stop growing. The mission to reach Mars will require new tech, meaning smart folks will have to push themselves to attain goals they would never have otherwise been given. The entire mission will bring us new discoveries, new technologies, and a better understanding of this weird-ass place we live.

Hell, I'd go, if I wasn't too old...and not smart..and not a bloody "astronaut"..pfft..details.

Take Columbus, for instance, those in the know said that he was wrong and he could not sail to China with the proposal he submitted. And they were right! They used the correct numbers to estimate the distance but Columbus used bad numbers and he never got there even though he maintained he did for the rest of his life.

Colombus didn't try to sail to China, but to India – hence the fact that the natives got to be called Indians, and the isles where Columbus actually arrived (he didn't set foot on the mainland until a later voyage) are named the West Indies.

People have said much the same before every technological and exploratory turning point and event in recorded history.

Yeah, Billy, it's always possible to find nay-sayers but the others who supported the endeavor seldom make the history books so we only hear about those who say no.
