That is a touching story. Glad they let it happen.
Years ago I had a dog that I trained for field trials. He was stolen. He'd never "escaped" from our home. Looking for him, got a call from on who had found him. Not. But close. Took that dog as it did not get along with his little dogs. Advertised him etc. Long story short, it became attached to my Dad. Only dog I knew in my life that did. Dad died while I was in 'Nam. The pain of losing my dog was more than made up for by knowing my Dad had such a loving dog as his.

I do not know if this dog will ever settle in with a new family/owner. There are some like Greyfriars Bobby that never understand.

If you have not heard about this dog you should:

With the cable unplugged and the machine thinking it's connected by wireless what does ipconfig show as IP and gateway addresses?

Well, it still doesn't work and neither does the wireless. The LAN cable works with this machine so it and the router are ok. Thing is the computer thinks it's connected by wireless but IE doesn't connect. Status shows no bytes received.

The machine should be in the same state at which it was received new.

Have a look in the Device manager: when connected to the docking station, does the NIC appear different from when stand-alone, or are there two NICs instead of one? If you answer yes to either question, then any hardware fault is more probably with the cable or with the router.

Well, I installed the Fujitsu drivers and rebooted. Still no LAN connectivity so I think it is time to declare a hardware alert.

With machines this old probably not worth while diagnosing and fixing?

Probably should try it while not connected to the base station/stand first.

Should be the first job immediately after the install. Some machines can be a bit picky about the order in which things are installed. See if there's a readme on the driver disk with any advice. If not I'd start with mobo and IDE drivers then graphics and finally work through the peripherals.

Stay offline through the whole process.

I'm installing now. Fujitsu supplied a disk with some of it's own drivers. At what point should I install them?

I've started using a program called device doctor to download drivers. My parents network wasn't working well until I DLed drivers for their network cards using Device Doctor and now their computers can see each other again.

I've been using Driver Genius for several years. Works quite well too.
