I just upgraded my 3-4 year old Netgear G to a Netgear WNDR3400v2. It's dual band, Wireless N up to 300 MB. I haven't had any problems with it despite the mixed reviews on amazon. Some people seem to have serious problems with it but I've been lucky so far. I cut the cable awhile back and went with an over the air antenna for local channels and Hulu/Netflix for "TV". The G router couldn't keep up. With this one I can watch Hulu in full HD without a problem. It was a compulsive buy while I was in a Radioshack... it was on sale for near amazon pricing so I pulled the trigger without much research. I like the dual band feature because I can put the kids on the G and save the higher speed for the TV and me

My current router is a Netgear, as were its predecessors, my wife's router at her office is a Netgear, most of my clients' routers are Netgear (guess who advised them ). All these routers are from the "ProSafe" series, with a lifetime guarantee. None of them has any problem, but all of them are at least 3 years old. I haven't had any brush with more recent routers from them, only with their Gigabit switches, which work flawlessly – so far. And unlike Billy's Linksys, I can use any browser I like to access the routers' admin interfaces.
This being said, there's always the possibility that Billy happened on a faulty unit, it does happen from time to time: my previous Netgear router (FVS124G) died and was replaced, at no cost and within a week, under their lifetime guarantee. The replacement is an FVS336G because they'd stopped manufacturing the 124 and hadn't yet started the 318G (I don't need the dual WAN, just the gigabit capability). I still have my very old RP114 which I keep as a backup just in case.

My last router was a Netgear, fairly pricey, and it lasted less than 3 years before abruptly failing completely. Current is a bottom of the line Linksys because I'm poor as f**k at the moment. It can only be accessed via a web interface, and ONLY with IE. If you use any other browser, it acts like you have the wrong Login/Pass.

Have a couple of older ones I have used for 3 or 4 years at home. One router, one as a ap. Never been a problem. Hope they stay that way.

Netgear seems to be taking a dive. Just spent over an hour setting up a customer's simple cable modem and wireless router. First, wouldn't work at all. Started thinking the new router was defective. Replaced the cat5 that came with the router and the ethernet connection started working. No wireless. After a dozen resets, I acquired the latest firmware for the router. Major change. New UI to learn. Still no wireless. Back to thinking the router is bad. "Limited connectivity". Grr. 3 resets and re-do of all info later, it starts working.

What a headache.

Another Newegg limited deal (few hours only).

SATA III Corsair SSD

90 gig so would be good for a C:\ (OS drive)

I have been using a pci-e card based 100 gig SSD (raid 0) for a while and I can tell you it makes a BIG difference in overall performance to use an SSD for your OS and software.

Not sure how $99 fits in (price wise) so make up your own mind

My wife has a Plustek scanner for her office, the SmartOffice PS-286. It's quite fast (about 20 sheets/minute) and can scan both sides of the sheets at once.

PJ said:
I've used several models of the Plustek scanners over the years at work. I wouldn't hesitate to use them in the future.

Thanks guys. Good to hear good things about a product before you buy it and read all of the "no way Jose" complaints after it is too late.

You've helped me make up my mind on this one.

I've used several models of the Plustek scanners over the years at work. The build quality always reminded me of the cheaper Cannons USB models but the speed and quality of the scan was quite good. I wouldn't hesitate to use them in the future.

It's quite fast (about 20 sheets/minute) and can scan both sides of the sheets at once. The software sitting in the system tray either turns the scanned pages into a PDF file or sends it directly as email, depending on the profile you select – with a button on the device – before scanning. It can also scan documents to OCR or business cards into your Outlook contacts, but my wife has never used these features, so I don't know how well they work.
