Nate on "LAN Question"

I have two high tech cameras connected to a Gigabit LAN (a Gigabit switch and my computer) that send data at at rates between 1 and 2 seconds per image per camera.

When i run my app with the system monitor on and (nothing else that I can turn off running) the monitor shows a bit over 25 MB/s which is about what it should be at 1.65 seconds per image. But I usually get some lost packets and then 1 lost frame.

The bandwidth used is probably between 200 and 250 Mb/s on this 1,000 Gb/s system and I'm using a MTU of 8228, lower than the maximum for the NIC or the switch.

Is this kind of low for the real world? <img src="http://www.winextra.com/forums/my-plugins/smiley-choice/Default Smiley/icon_confused.gif" title=":?" class="bb_smilies" />

More info:

On my end I use some code and a type of buffer defined in the vendors' SDK. I can set from 2 to n buffers (frames) per camera (each camera acquisition code is in it's own thread). I don't see a difference going from 4 to 6 frames. I have some debugging timers set up and see that each thread waits an average of 900 ms for the next available frame after having moved the raw data to disk so I don't think it's my code as it's simple.

I need to find a base level so that I can transmit about 40 minutes of images without frame errors and at that point will attempt see how long it takes to process the data on it's way to the disk so that I can estimate real world throughput and see if it is reasonable for our work.

This is on Ubuntu Linux and I'm using Eclipse for and IDE but am not running in debug mode. There's another LAN connected to the internet and I run with everything turned off that I can. In the end it will run without XWindows and as root so there should be a little speed increase.

Had the LaCie raid 10 NAS go cold on me <img src="http://www.winextra.com/forums/my-plugins/smiley-choice/Default Smiley/icon_sad.gif" title=":(" class="bb_smilies" />

Pulled the power supply to find out it is a modular 200 watt 1U server supply... sweet... I thought for sure I would find some open frame hardwired piece of junk

Did the old paper clip pin 14 (ps_on) to ground test with a 12V fan plugged in and yep.. cold as witch's +!+... bummer..

BUT.. the fact that it was a modular "real computer" power supply I just happened to have a (way too large to fit) spare 350 watt supply from a system I took apart about a decade ago with the same molex 20 pin connector...

Plugged in the 20 pin molex and the 5/12 DC connector and shazzam... the NAS sprung to life again.

So... I powered down, unplug the cabling, re-routed the cabling from the ATX power supply through the hole left in the back by the original modular power supply, out the side and up to the Linux controller board plugs, buttoned everything back up, hit the power button again and... volia... HELLO NAS once again <img src="http://www.winextra.com/forums/my-plugins/smiley-choice/Default Smiley/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

Now I have some time to find a 1U micro ATX supply to replace the dead one and put it all back together as it should be.

So, I bought this device: Roku. Streams audio/video. You select channels like Netflix, Pandora. Like the game consoles and blue ray players. Just viewing some of the free stuff, I get this buffering action, like I sometimes do on youtube. Likely my slow internet speed.
Recent tests show 1 Mbps d/l.
Netflix advertised a d/l of only 500kbps needed. I understand that they throttle resolution to achieve this.
Now here's my question before I try their trial. What-a-ya-think? I don't want to give my isp any more money. Besides, everything is a 'bundle' these days. Woopeedo.

Does XP support multiple sound cards? Will it be as easy as installing them and Voila windows sees and accepts them, or will it be a PITA?
For our theatre I'm trying to get 3 or 4 separate stereo pairs. The sound program I have will send the sound to any of 4 stereo outputs, with the ability to pan it left, right or anywhere in between. Having this flexibility really helps create the illusion of a car driving away, or a plane flying diagonally over the space.
thanks

I'm on vacation on Catalina Island, California. The hotel where we are staying has cabins, some separate some with shared walls and a few on the low end are two story. They are arranged up a hillside with a central stairs and lots of vegetation. At the bottom is a patio and set back from the stairs is a 4 plex which is modern - the others probably date from the 1920's. The office is midway up the stairs and that's where the wireless modem is. They replaced it last night but there still is little or no signal in the 4 plex.

I advised Tony, the owner, to check to see if he was sharing channel 6 with a dozen others and change if so.

IIRC wireless repeaters are available, is that correct? The repeater could be placed where it receives a good signal and is LOS with the 4plex?

Here's a link the the hotel. http://www.lapalomalasflores.com/

I told Tony I would attempt to check with the experts!

Edit:
I looked at all the WiFi signals here in the patio and found that the Hotel WiFi strength is ~38% (13% noise) and he is using Ch 6. One third of access points with a signal strength of 18% or more are on 6 as well, thats 6 out of 20.

I noticed a big signal drop when several people went to the office so I suspect there is a placeent problem as well.

My Dlink is dog slow, but more than that I keep having to reboot it because of connectivity issues.

I'm thinking I'd like to get a different NAS. It seems to me that Pierre likes Synology. Any other ideas?

I have 2 1TB drives in my Dlink configured in Raid 1, I'd like to keep the same configuration. Do you know if I get a different NAS if I will need to copy all the data to a different drive, then mount the drives, then rebuild the array?

This one has some great reviews. Think it would be a good one for me? Basically all I use it for is data storage, no streaming, etc...

I've got an AMD cpu that's running very hot...over 50c at idle. Considering that about 60c is top end for this cpu, it's got a problem. The monitor util I used to use appears to have been abandoned, no 7 support.

What all the rage for monitors these days?

After many years of running a raid 10 NAS and external USB raid 1 as my redundant backup system I have taken the plunge and purchased a supermicro 1U server to run in my house as a dedicated backup server (another one of those... way too good deals to pass up).

http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/1U/6015/SYS-6015P-TR.cfm

I have a single CPU, several sticks of ram, along with 4 identical enterprise drives left over from other server builds (redundant spare parts). I will only have 1 CPU in it (E5450) and keep the other socket empty.

Has anyone seen the new release of Windows Home Server 2011 yet? I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere and I don't want to get a copy of the older version as it is based on server 2003 and the new release is based on server 2008 architecture.

I can't even find a 30 trial download for win 2011 <img src="http://www.winextra.com/forums/my-plugins/smiley-choice/Default Smiley/icon_sad.gif" title=":(" class="bb_smilies" />

I will be keeping the NAS and USB around as another layer of redundancy, just gaining more automation in the daily backup process by having a dedicated backup server.
