This is just coming out...

http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/MySQL-com-hacked-to-serve-malware-1350358.html

Security firm Armorize reports that Oracle's MySQL.com web site was hacked to serve Windows malware on 26 September. The attackers modified the JavaScript file "common/js/s_code_remote.js" on the server; this file is downloaded with all pages on MySQL.com. The modified version created an iFrame which then loaded the "Blackhole exploit pack". The exploit pack in turn uses vulnerabilities in older browsers or unpatched versions of Flash Reader and Java to compromise Windows systems and allow the installation of back-doors, bots and other contaminants.

For the past two days, I've been warned by Windows Update of 4 "important" updates in 3 different batches. Fortunately none of these updates required a reboot, but so many patches off schedule is becoming bothersome…

Pierre on "Microsoft is messing users up again – with Skype this time"

It's only been a few weeks since Microsoft acquired Skype, and already Skype is misbehaving in an uncorrectable and irritating manner. The Skype forums are rife with protests from users about the "Skype Home" pop-up when Skype starts.

If you set Skype to display its "compact" window, upon startup the latest Skype version (5.5) will display both its main window and its "Skype Home" window, even if you set Skype to start minimized as a tray icon, and you have to close those two windows manually or use some risky workarounds involving kludgy apps written by irate users.

In spite of the Beta testers telling the developers about this problem, it has not been corrected in the final version, and there is currently no option in the Skype settings to disable the "Skype Home" pop-up, nor is there any plan to add one, apparently.

Apparently the "Skype Home" window is only useful if you have a Facebook account and FB "friends". Presumably it can also be used to display some ads, but currently it isn't. If they don't correct this behavior by adding an option to disable the "Skype Home" pop-up, I'll seriously consider switching to ooVoo – which, in addition, allows 3-way video calls for free, unlike Skype. You may remember ooVoo as the video conferencing and recording software Steven and Paul used for the last few Daily Brief video blogs.
