Well, I may not be most people, but I like the Start menu. I organize its contents into folders and sub-folders so I don't have to grope through, as you state it, "a list of programs that can number in the hundreds" – which, BTW, is exactly what the new start screen forces me to do – in order to find what I need. And most especially, the Start menu displays when I choose it, not when I inadvertently (or for some other specific purpose) move my mouse to a specific area of the display.

I installed W8 for the first time last week on my non-touch screen laptop. It is the first time since Windows 2k I didn't install a beta. I can see Microsoft's point for ditching the start menu. How many people click Start - All Programs - and manually search through a list of programs that can number in the hundreds, or go to Control Panel and click 20 icons to find something? Since Vista, I have used the search bar in the start menu for doing everything from configuring the OS to launching applications, finding email, etc. I quit using the Start Menu and used search for everything. In that regard, Windows 8 has a full Screen "Start Menu" that can be accessed by hitting Windows Key + W.. or clicking the search charm (what a dumb name for an icon).

There are two concurrent problems here: the general economy slump isn't helping computer sales, any more than it is helping automobile or home appliances sales. Then, people hesitate to move to Windows 8 because it requires learning new tricks (the so-called "Modern" interface is awkward when used without a touch-sensitive screen, and the desktop without an application menu is next to unusable) If I were heading a large company with thousands of computers, I'd send Microsoft packing and switch to Linux. If retraining of the users is required anyway, I might as well invest in retraining them for a stable work environment where most of the tools they're used to are available or substituted (with the notable exception of Outlook), and free of charge to boot.

interesting read on the subject of Win 8 as well <img src="http://www.winextra.com/forums/my-plugins/smiley-choice/Default Smiley/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />
I know at work that Desktop sales are plummeting but they are not being replaced by a corresponding surge in notebook and tablet sales.

If true, it's excellent news. But without a Start Menu substitute, it's not enough.

Well, missed that too. Am "working" several hours per day at the office. Get really worn out and don't feel like doing much in the evening.
Did download the free version and see how well it works. I will be backing up to a Buffalo NAS.
