I am happy to report that it works great and I am back using one of my favorite apps.

Ars Technica is reporting on a statement released by Symantec today that Vista will “reduce customer choice” when it comes to computer security

Now, with Microsoft’s new operating system Vista still on pace for release in January 2007, Symantec is warning that the OS may harm it and other security software companies. In a statement released today, Symantec communications director Chris Paden said that Vista will “reduce consumer choice” when it comes to computer security.

However if you check the current listing of AV/security software packages that work with Vista RC1 as compiled and maintained by IEXBeta.com just about every security package works; including Symantec’s.

So who’s trying to bullshit who here?

For those of you moving over to Vista maybe be wondering why your memory usage being reported in Task Manager is so radically different than it was in XP.

Well apparently it is because of the way that Vista utilizes that available memory. Jeff Atwood; over on the Coding Horror blog provides a nice and easy explanation of what is going on:

Those figures explain why I only have 6 megabytes of “free” memory in Windows Vista. Vista is trying its darndest to pre-emptively populate every byte of system memory with what it thinks I might need next. It’s running a low-priority background task that harvests previously accessed data from the disk and plops it into unused system memory. They even have a fancy marketing name for it– SuperFetch

I can totally understand the need for UAC (User Access Control) from a security point of view; but damn there had to be a better way to do this.

I have only been using Vista full time for a couple of days now and while in general I have been enjoying it this implementation of UAC sucks rocks.

The eye candy might be getting people in through the door; so to speak, but the current UAC is going to piss people off en masse. I know this has been mentioned ad nauseam in a lot of the more tech blogs looking at Vista; but it is nothing compared to what we are going to hear when Vista reaches a broader average user userbase.

One of the most bemoaned features of Vista has been the UAC (User Account Control) security measures. For those power users out there this has been a real pain in the butt and something that they want more control over.

Well Tim Snead has come to the rescue with a well written explanation of how you can get some control back over UAC; but I especially liked this comment he made:

It is possible to switch UAC off. I really don’t recommend it - if you like full control over your machine, surely you want to know when something is attempting to perform an administrative-level action? Nevertheless, I’d prefer to have you run Windows Vista without UAC than having you run a different operating system.

A nice little bit of honesty
