Many apologies about the lack of a round-up yesterday but I wasn’t having the best of days but I’m back in full force with today’s Microsoft and Windows round-up.

Microsoft:

  • At Microsoft, there’s a thin line between a tablet and a slate – Mary Jo Foley
Microsoft released this week a Community Technology Preview test build of its Windows Embedded Compact 7 product — and introduced yet more murkiness into the “which operating system is best for which form factor” debate. I have a (tiny) bit more clarity about the company’s latest guidance now (I think)….
  • LIVE: Steve Ballmer, Ray Ozzie At All Things D (MSFT) – Business Insider
If all that wasn’t enough, we ran a poll yesterday asking if Bill Gates should return to the company. A whopping 80% of the respondents said yes! In another poll we ran asking if Ballmer should be tossed, 75% said yes. Ballmer does not have the full faith of the people. Let’s hear what he has to say!
  • Zune And United Airlines To Sing Sweet Duet – The Next Web
Zune and United Airlines are teaming up to provide a wider selection of music to United Airlines passengers as they jet around the world. With the integration of ‘Zune inflight audio’ passengers can access some 21 channels of music that are divided based on genre. The music is selected by the Zune team, handling the process of deciding which tracks are appropriate for each station.
  • Yammer Brings its Microblogging Service to Microsoft Sharepoint – ReadWriteWeb
Yammer introduced today its Microsoft Sharepoint Web Part, which integrates Yammer with Sharepoint. Using the Web Part, available for Windows SharePoint Server 2007 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS), Yammer users will now be able to put a Yammer feed on “virtually any SharePoint page” and post to Yammer from different areas within Sharepoint. MOSS users will be able to view Yammer messages alongside Sharepoint search results.
  • Gartner: plan to be out of WinXP by end of 2012 – Sunbelt Blog
Well-known predictor of the future Gartner is advising enterprises to start installing and testing Windows 7 this year and try to finish replacement of Windows XP by the end of 2012.

Gartner Group… Aren't they the ones who predicted that "the last mainframe [would] be plugged off by the end of 1996"? If they're still as accurate, we can expect them to still be using XP in 2015… LOL
