Looking to add a layer of security to your information and files that you have on your computer or send to others via email Sophos today announce the availability of Sophos Free Encryption. As well Chris Kraft, VP of Sophos Product Management, outlined a few simple rules to protecting your sensitive information in a post on the Sophos blog:

For the average consumer out there, there are a few recommendations that can help safeguard your information. Follow these simple guidelines to reduce the risk that your information is exposed unnecessarily:

  • Never send information you deem sensitive in an email body. Email is like a postcard sent via snail-mail – freely readable by anyone whose hands touches it in the delivery process.
  • When sending information in email that is sensitive:
    • if it’s not already in a file format, save the information to a file (for example, using Microsoft Word, Notepad)
    • encrypt the sensitive information.

Some applications include their own password/encryption capabilities. To make the process easy and to keep secret even file information (like filenames and types), I recommend using a utility to create an encrypted archive.

    • send the information as a file attachment to the email
    • contact the recipient out of band (for example by phone) to inform them of the password to open the file. Do not send the password in the email body as that is like sending the keys to open the safe along with the safe itself.
