Is Tech Blogging Getting Boring?

Where's the fun and interesting stuff? Another day and another post or two to write after reading gawd knows how many feeds or how many refreshed pages on FriendFeed and yet there is nothing interesting at all to write about. Maybe it’s just because its the weekend and there’s absolutely nothing of interest. Or maybe it’s because the weekend bitchmeme appears to be missing in action and people don’t know what to do with themselves.

Or maybe because after ten years or so blogging as we read it day after day is becoming stale and boring. After all you could close your eyes on any given day of the week and pretty well guess with about 90% accuracy what everyone will be talking about. It would go something like this:

  • Twitter is down
  • Twitter is up
  • The A-List is dead
  • The A-List isn’t dead
  • Techmeme is rigged
  • The iPhone rocks
  • Microsoft sucks
  • Loren is a racist
  • Loren is misunderstood
  • Microsoft is buying Yahoo
  • Microsoft isn’t buying Yahoo
  • You are an idiot if you suggest the newest Web 2.0 darling isn’t so hot after all
  • Google is the best company in the world

Maybe it’s just that I’m a year older today and everything seems to be the same as it was yesterday – nothing new – nothing interesting. Maybe it’s because there are interesting things that I would like to experiment with in the blogging world but that digital divide which everyone doesn’t want to admit exists is just showing how real it is.

The fact is that today blogging about technology is as boring as hell.

Maybe it’ll be less boring tomorrow … who knows.

    Someone needs to create TemplateCrunch or something. Release templates under a Creative Commons license including your topics that you mentioned in the article... but generic. Why X Will Fail, Why X is Dead, etc.

    Tech *writing* is getting boring. There's few people out there digging out interesting stuff, while most tech writers are content to rehash press releases and stuff they've read elsewhere. There's honourable exceptions, but mostly... dull.

    Yes, honestly, it is. One of the things I'm trying to do with my show is step outside the tech box and get into real issues.

    thank you for noticing I haven't been blogging much lately. Been too busy having interesting conversations with people like politicians and stadium architects. If tech is boring you aren't using it for anything interesting!

    @Robert .. if you read the post you would have seen there are things that I want to try but for various reasons I can't - not everyone has the resources that you do my friend

    Robert - You are an idiot if you suggest the Steve has noticed that are not blogging lately..nowhere in his post does he remotely even suggest that and somewhere you have inserted yourself into this convo, as if you are really an interesting tech blogger or something of that nature. Sorry I echo Aaron comments above , but I am surely very direct ..and btw I find your FF posts more interesting then your darn vid's and at times (like this) - your comments are a bundle of shit !! :)-

    I am just trying to make things interesting. It is amazing, though, that more than a million people waited in lines for iPhone's and you have the audacity to say tech is boring. Sure was interesting to the two architects I interviewed this week.

    I also find it interesting that most people in the world have no clue what any of the stuff we talk about is yet we are already bored. This is arrogance of highest level. If you are bored with tech blogging, then go write a blog that teaches other people something!

    Mark Trapp, I confess I *did* download the silly More Cowbell app from the iPhone App Store and if so motivated can now actually add more cowbell to any song playing on the iPhone .

    The echo is friggin awesome in the tech blogosphere. There are a few who stand apart from the rest, though. I also notice a few coming into their own. As far as not being interested in writing anything...I think you're just having a bad day, Steven. Rest your brain :)

    @scoble: amen to that! my non-tech friends could give two sh*ts about what TechCrunch or TechMeme or Slashdot or Digg or Gizmodo or sixty-nine other tech blogs and publications have to say...about anything. Technosphere, please get over yourself, back away from the computer, and interact with 'real' people in the 'real world' just a little more. me, now I need to get back to FriendFeeding!

    Tech blogging is probably getting boring because, like all things, the A-list bloggers cannot remain on top forever. It's the law of nature. New blood, fresh faces, and better content are coming soon.

    It's not enough (IMO) to just re-write tech news. How are folks impacted by it, how can they use it to make their lives better, why would they use / not use some tech over other, etc... I'll be the first to say that I don't do that enough, but that's my ultimate goal: share the news and add value to it on a personal level.
