Observation: Twitter is Web 2.0’s Windows

Jun 25th, 2008 | By Steven Hodson | Category: The Social Web

Deadbird cartoon by Hugh MacLeod No I haven’t gone off the deep end and nor am I thinking that Twitter is an operating system like Windows. I am referring more to the users of both things rather than the actual Twitter service and Windows OS. With Windows you can be guaranteed that at any minute anywhere in the world someone is bitching and complaining about the operating system. Where ever you turn on the web you can read about someone cursing how much they hate it and yet they will be faithful users and update it when needed.

With Twitter it has become our latest Web 2.0 service to swear at whenever it goes down or moan when parts of the service are unavailable. You can read about it on FriendFeed or on blog posts around the web and yet we can’t seem to be without it. As with Windows faithful Twitter users will bitch and moan but in the next breath they will be posting to Twitter about how mad it makes them.

Windows and Twitter – we love to hate them both but we wouldn’t want to be without either of them.
