Making a buck is cool – Pissing me off isn’t

You know I totally get that these big blog networks need to make money. After all they have all these really cool parties to throw (which are usually sponsored), mega conferences to host (which are usually sponsored) and some possibly expensive writing talent to pay (at least those that aren’t the interns). So I have no problem with them wanting to maximize their available space for the highest possible dollar return courtesy of their advertisers.
Except for a couple of things.
First off those stupid ass Snap popups aren’t winning you guys any friends so I sure hope you’re making a fistful of money from them because your readers are gonna get fed at some point with this visual pollution.
But this second one really pissed me off and for what reason? So I can see The Hulk in the middle of the page hawking some dumb ass service that now the ad has pissed me off I want nothing to do with. I won’t say which of the top 5 blog networks I saw the following on but it started out with the following right in the middle of the page

When you hovered your mouse over any part of the ad trying to find where to close the damn thing this is what you got

Which was followed by this

And then it returned to

Irritating to say the least except for one thing – There was no way to exit the ad – NONE!
Now for big blogs that regularly get short term ad deals in excess of some executive’s yearly salary plus bonus this type of money grubbing is nothing short of insulting to me as a reader. So if you think that the 30 or 70 grand you are getting for running things like the Norton ad above or those pain in the ass Snap popups is worth pissing off your faithful readers then I guess it’s time to re-evaluate our relations – because this isn’t working for me.
