A new weekend feature coming to WinExtra
May 31st, 2008 | By Steven Hodson | Category: Odds & Ends
I have been called cranky, grumpy, opinionated, stupid and probably a few other descriptive terms that are better left in a sailor’s bar but the one thing I have have been is interested in conversations. The thing that I have found though is that so much of the conversations about tech seem to happen around the bigger names of the tech blogosphere. It doesn’t matter whether it is one of the services like FriendFeed or Twitter but when one of the big voices says something all the conversations seem to gravitate towards them and what they are talking about.
This isn’t all bad I realize but in the process some really excellent blogs get missed because they don’t have anyone pointing a neon sign in their direction. It also seems that everyone is interested in swarming around the big boy posts about the newest and greatest services being released on an almost daily basis. As much fun as this might be reading all these reviews and playing with new toys there is also a much bigger portion of the tech blogosphere that contributes to the richness of the on-line conversation. Unfortunately this section - the non A-List blogger - seems to get lost in the information shuffle.
So starting this weekend I will be taking one blog a week and reviewing them. The way it will work is this - I will spend the week watching the blog and looking at how the conversation develops around it on the blog itself and on FriendFeed. As well I will look at things like the blog’s design and how the blog owner interacts with their readers. Over time I will probably add more things to the review including possibly later on things like interviews - either by email or Skype.
The blogs reviewed will be ones that I have found during my lurking around on FriendFeed or as a result of clicking a link in a post I am reading. If the blog grabs my attention somehow it will get added to my list of one’s to watch. I will then pick a specific one and really watch it for the week. Then on Saturday night I will write up the review to be posted for Sunday morning. I won’t take submissions for review so don’t bother trying to email me with suggestions - this is strictly going to be my selections.
I’m doing this because I think know there are a lot of really good blogs out there that don’t get read because the attention and conversation is going elsewhere. I also think that as fun as doing these Top 5 or Top 10 type lists of blogs can be they also don’t give enough information about the blog to benefit potential readers; and possibly even the blog owners themselves so they can improve if needed.
I already have my first victim err blog picked out for tomorrow so make sure you stop by sometime tomorrow to check out who I’ve picked on for the first of WinExtra’s Weekend Blog Review.
