Windows 7 Multi-Touch - pass the Windex

Man that's some dirty windows you have there So is everyone all breathless over the exciting news that came out of the D6 conference in a five minute demo that Windows 7 is going to have multi-touch capabilities?

As usual the response is all over the place on this with MG Siegler suggesting on VentureBeat that he sure hopes that Microsoft won’t cave to the naysayers and actually bring this idea to market. His thinking is that besides adding some interesting capabilities to Windows it could also redeem Microsoft and lift it out out of a funk.

Me? Well I have a couple of questions

1. Are we going to have to buy new monitors to be able to use this glorious new technology?

2. Past the first five minutes of the oh isn’t this frikken cool factor will anyone really use it?

3. Whose gonna pay for my now required purchases of Windex and paper towels because of all of the greasy fingerprints forever on my monitors?

Sorry but I’m really ambivalent over this whole multi-touch thing and I sure hope that there is more to this horse and pony show than just being able to move stuff around your screens with your fingers.

Touch interfaces probably work better on small mobile devices like a phone than a laptop screen - but I share the sentiment that any innovation coming from MS these days is a good thing (just how innovative this really is, is another question). At its core, the Windows user interface hasn't really changed much since Win95 and it's about time MS put some effort into giving us something better.

On the effort to give us something new I can definitely agree with but even better would be something that isn't a humongous resource hog that constantly requires hardware upgrades. Now you can't tell me that with all the smart people that work at Microsoft that this can't be done.

As far as Windex and paper towels, all it takes to keep my iPhone clean is a soft cloth dampened with nothing but water. Paper towels are actually bad because they leave lint.

The first thing I thought of was how people complained about having to buy new hardware for Vista, now with Windows 7 they will need to buy new monitors.

Yeah, I really find it difficult to think of a situation where I'd use it for anything practical. I can't envisage any app I use today where win touch would be helpful or even desirable, and I use a lot of apps.

And of course we'll have to buy new monitors. :)

As I said, MS needs to make sure it's more than just a gimmick. It works great on the iPhone, but on my MacBook Pro, it's more of a Gimmick. There need to be good apps for it. As for Windex, yes, stock up :) Actually though with the screen protector (static cling) on the iPhone, it's really not bad at all, I was so worried about that when I bought it.
