After my bit of a tirade about Twitter yesterday I didn’t really expect to be saying all that much about it again for some time; but as with all things Internet time is a purely subjective measurement. So following a couple of excellent posts by MG Siegler at VentureBeat and Nik Cubrilovic at TechCrunch where they both talked about Twitter coming clean for a change about what the problems were I decided to add this footnote.
As it turns out the problems are - they don’t know what is causing Twitter’s downtime and other technical issues. Per usual fingers have been pointed at the Ruby on Rails framework that Twitter was built on and when that doesn’t fit the bill they make mention of the the lack of enterprise scalability experts to help them with Twitter’s forward growth.
Out of all of this though in my opinion is that Twitter has for the first time been forthright with their customers about there being a problem; but even more amazing is the public revelation that they don’t know what is causing the service’s problems. For that the company finally has to be given kudos and just as they are closing in on a fresh round of financing we should be giving them another round of trust.
While that trust may be tentative for a lot of Twitter users the point is that their openness has probably breathed more life into the service than any VC money being pumped into the system. Let’s just hope that they finally manage to fix the underlying problems that their massive growth has created before the user trust is no longer redeemable at the bank. For as much as they might have a monetary obligation to their investors they have an even bigger obligation to its users; even though it is a free service, who have remained faithful through thick and thin.
